For me, any stick will do. If you are using it on your lap like most USF4/SFV players do, be sure to do some research, as some of the sticks aren't comfortable to be placed on your lap.

I don't know much about sticks, but be sure to get one that is compatible with xbox360.

Anything with seimitsu parts is going to be great for shmups. I can recommend the ls-58 for a stick, it's the best I've used, or the ls-32, ever so slightly stiffer but pretty much the same.

Both of these qanba sticks at arcadeshock are in stock and have the ls-58

This one uses seimitsu parts but doesn't mention which ones

These two at the official qanba shop are similair to the one you mentioned, the black one uses the ls-32 so I'm assuming the other does too.

I'm not sure if there are any good stick shops in italy, I'm in the UK and have to import, you might have to do the same.

Download joytokey as well - http://joytokey.net/en/download
very handy for mapping buttons to the keyboard when a game doesn't support the pov hat or buttons.

Yeah, seimitsu sticks are really good. I still just prefer the PS4 d-pad and analog stick.

Hi squerc,

Rather than tell you what I prefer, let me give you this bit of advice; if your new to arcade sticks:
WAIT!
Thats right, wait and research, learn and if at all posible get a hands-on test with as many as possible.
Make sure the stick is easily moddable, in case you dont like the buttons, stick etc. and want to change them out.
What is the top-panel made from? How is the stick connected to the top panel? These things determine the sticks haptic feedback.

The following site, although more of a arcade stick builder site, is one of the best for info - http://slagcoin.com/joystick/introduction.html

Good luck.

It depends on your price range, but I personally use a Madcatz TE1 that I got back at the launch of SF4, that I modded a bunch. I mainly got it for fighting games, but it's great for shmups too.

Really anything with authentic Sanwa or Seimitsu parts is going to probably be good, but you should also check the input latency of whatever you're thinking of buying too. Here's a handy chart for that where someone tested a bunch of sticks:

http://www.teyah.net/sticklag/results.html

Really though, if you need to know more, I would check around fighting game forums. There are a lot of people who are very picky and thorough about arcade sticks there.

Sanwa parts are better for fighting games but seimitsu are better for shmups.
Sanwa sticks are looser and their buttons more sensitive.
A tighter stick is much better for micro-tapping, you won't move anywhere you didn't intend to move and you won't push a button by accident just because your finger was resting on it.

I have also been looking for an arcade stick, but I want something really solid, like wood or metal body, and minimalistic design. But I haven't really found anything pre-built with a wood body, just DIY kits. Well except for the X-Arcade sticks (I used to have one actually, but I want something with Seimitsu or Sanwa parts, also I didn't really like the design of them).

I'm currently considering this:

Looks pretty minimalistic and solid, and the artwork can be easily changed. But the button color scheme is not very good. They should have used black buttons, grey is difficult to match with artwork.

thx everyone,if I had not make this post now I would've totally bought the first thing that looked cool overpay it and that's it,now that I see there is a HUGE variety of those I will take my time and see,the thing is as clippa says,I live in italy so basically the only site I usually buy from here is amazon, but as I see now the prices are crazy compared to the real value, and the variety ain't that big, just saying that I don't find any sticks with seimitsu parts, can be enough,I guess for this purchase I have to get them imported and spend those 20 30 euros more,I'll look carefully into it

I have the exact same stick, and can vouch for it. The stock parts aren't fantastic, but definitely useable. The stock parts can also be swapped out very easily, so you can customize to your hearts content. Only issue is artwork, it's printed on the plastic cover. You need to buy a piece of clear plexi from someone online if you want some custom artwork.

Anything from hori/madcatz/qanba
Rudy Mar 14, 2016 @ 11:27pm
Hori Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai is a really good stick, it also has the same parts as you can find on any arcade machine in japan.

Not anything, check which parts they use as this is very important. I wouldn't bother with madcatz unless you're prepared to mod.

The most popular joystick you will find in arcades in Japan is the seimitsu ls-32, the stick you mentioned uses hori's own hayabusa buttons and stick.
