Is Deathsmiles like Parodius? It's a horizontal shooter like Parodius and you sort of have an option in the form of a familiar (or two, in the case of one character), but that's basically where the similarities end. You don't have anything like the bells or the powerups in Deathsmiles. Parodius can be considered as an oldskool shmup while Deathsmiles most certainly is of the new school (danmaku or bullet hell). There's a rather big difference between the two; in classical shmups, you have fewer bullets but those are aimed and travel faster. In bullet hell shmups, you get more slow moving spreads you have to weave through. Deathsmiles is a great danmaku for newcomers though. It lets you select the difficulty level on each stage which lets you ease into the game; this is a whole lot more welcoming to new players to the genre than most other bullet hell shmups.
As for having the same humor, well, you'll be hard pressed to find any shmup like Parodius in that regard. Stuff like giant cancan dancers and penguins with toilet bowls as hats aren't encountered very often, in games or otherwise.
So, do I recommend Deathsmiles? Well, yes, it's one of the best horizontal shooters imho. But don't expect it to be anything like Parodius except for moving from left to right, shooting and dodging bullets.
I know they don't look alike, but it's the closest i found to Parodius. thanks for the comment :)
Another Gradius-like you can try is Hydora by Locomalito, you can download it for free from his page.
None of them share the bizarre setting of Patrodius mind you, they are galactic sci-fi (although Gradius has always had a bizarre touch with its Moais, bubbles and dragon-creating suns)
Thank you very much
