What other games are similar to the mood and atmosphere of Conarium?
I really enjoyed Conarium! I'm not usually a fan of most horror games, but the atmosphere of this game was fantastic! What are some similar games, as far as atmosphere and mood? No jump scare games need apply! Thanks!

Dead Secret

https://store.steampowered.com/app/402260/Dead_Secret/
is the best horror/mystery game I've played in the last few years. My review if that helps.

It is not a "jump scare game" ... but ... well ... don't play it if you have a heart condition either :senpai:

Like Conarium, it has a slow pace. The game has a smaller map and there is much more information gathering, and by the end you need to solve the mystery instead of just "how do I get to the end of the map". The setting is very different (a lonely country house) but the tone is very similar.

Oh yeah

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

is also really good. No jump scares I can remember, but ... you're not always safe either. Mostly you're just exploring and investigating. I think you'd like it. My review if that helps :senpai:

Vanishing of Ethan Carter is great but pretty much a WalkingSim. I wish there were more games that were drenched in atomsphere and story minus action. Jump scares and running are rote for me. Here are a couple I know of though not all are dark

(With Miasmata, once you get to a certain point, it is 100% free roam...no scares.)

>observer_ is good but there's a lot to complain about. #1, you don't feel isolated which makes the atmosphere very different from Conarium's. In case it's helpful to anyone, I wrote a review for that too.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!

I've played a few of these, and I see the parallels, especially as far as isolation and mystery go, but that Lovecraftian tone is a maybe little light, IMO. But I sure appreciate the suggestions, because...who knows, until you experience it!

I'm going to explore some of these titles mentioned that I'm less familiar with. And your reviews are helpful and meaningful to me, so thanks some more!

By the way, The Land of Pain is available right now for $1 as part of the Cryengine Bundle. Supposed to be very "Lovecraftian" :Maul:

I also bought that bundle because of Land of Pain and thought I didn't have Aporia...but I already did...oops.

I started playing it and it is gorgeous and definitely atomospheric (not creepy or scary though)! Totally recommend getting that bundle.

I just grabbed tier 1 of the bundle too, don't forget to gift Aporia to a friend if you already have it :d4_wink:

You do know these devs also did the Lovecraft inspired Darkness Within games right?
Arucard May 14, 2018 @ 12:05pm
I got one of the Darkness Within games after playing a little bit of Conarium, but I couldn't get into it as much because of the movement and pacing I guess?

Anyway, I don't know how to do the fancy store links like above, so you'll have to search out these on your own. I'm also not sure if you're looking specifically for Lovecraft games, or just a similar atmosphere. I've suggested some Lovecraft themed stuff before in another thread, but following the style and atmosphere of this game I can point you (and others) toward these titles:

Year Walk
- based on old tradition and folklore from Sweden

Stories Untold
- text-ish gameplay with surprising twists

Night in the Woods
- very casual, but odd/creepy as you get deeper and quite intriguing

Scanner Sombre
- Isolated cave exploration (not as good as PA but good)

Remothered
- Real atmospheric horror, similar to Clock Tower style ( you can't really fight back, only hide )

Among the Sleep
- A toddler's journey into nightmares with only his teddy as companion

Little Nightmares
- Probably well known, but great atmosphere in puzzle-platforming style

I would also second the above suggestions of any of the Penumbra/Amnesia games (you should already have them though!!), Layers of Fear, and Firewatch.

Honorable mentions would include; The Last Station, Realms of the Haunting, Sunless Sea, Gone Home, Lone Survivor, and for God's sake get at least one of the original Silent Hill games if you haven't played them yet!!

Pleasant dreams, friends.

-P.S. Alan Wake if you have a 360 and can get a decent priced copy now that it's been taken down. It's worth searching for, seriously.

Yeah, I found Darkness Within 1 to be unplayable. Not happy to report it, just how it is.

Arucard, posting steam links is easy ... just post the link
