didn't understand the cellar door puzzle
I was able to get past it and finish the game with no problem, but I feel like just blundered into the solution rather than actually figuring it out. was there something inside of the mansion that I missed that would have helped?

Same here. I didn't want to go back immediately, so I dabbled around with different button combinations for a few minutes, and got luck.

I suppose there's a hint for that puzzle somewhere in the mansion, but I did not see it either.

What's odd, though, is that there even is an achievement for solving this puzzle without clues. But I did not get that achievement. So the game apparently thinks that it showed me a clue, but I must have overlooked it.

(Interestingly, the icon of the achievement spoils the puzzle's solution. Not sure if that's intended.)

Oh, so that's what the calendar was for! I figured it was important, but never thought to connect it with the display cases.

That would explain why I didn't get the achievement. I did pick up the calendar, and I looked at every display case (picking everything up as well). I just never made the connection. But from the perspective of the game's programming, I've certainly received the clues. ;)

Answer to door is on the door itself.. I stood there for a second and was like, "huh?" I looked at it for a moment and I was like, "oh, is it really that simple?" I then put in the answer I saw and it worked =P. The door has 3 symbols (rings) going from out to in on the little lock thing. These 3 symbols happen to correlate with the symbols around the lock. The first symbol is the outermost symbol.

Split spoilers up to give more and more levels of detail in case you want different levels of hints to figure this out =P.

Maybe I'm the only one that did it this way because I did not care about the calendar, the display cases, or the paintings.

I'd assume that "taking the calendar" means "taking the hint", then ...

@nestharus: You seem to mean a completely different door. I see no rings there.

Read the text/journal entries associated with items 1, 6 and 13. 1, 6 and 13 being the dates circled on the calendar.
