Hay? Silage? WTF!!!!! & What about straw/chaff?
Ok the title says it all. I'm new to this and have searched all of the tutorials and none of them really say anything about hay or silage only general statements.

So how do you go about making hay? I know that you mow grass and it makes hay but how long to you have to let it lay there before it gets dried to become hay? Or can you mow it, then bale it , and then wrap it to make silage? Can you drop these bakes at the gas plant or do you have to use the silage silos at the gas plant?

Also is there any real use for the straw/chaff other than selling those bales to get some money?

Yes I'm new to this and like I said I'm looking through the tutorials but I'm not getting the answers to the questions I've got.

Thanks for the help in advance.

selling hay or straw is a huge waste of time. I mean it can be fun to try out the mechanics but the time involved just dosent make it worth it. Those items are typically made for feeding cows.

I know that doesn't answer the 'how' part but I do want to say you will sooner or later find out that this game is really 'silage simulator' the amount of money you can make by creating silage is wild. I would do that first and you don't need to bail the grass to make silage. again I know I am not saying everything but the info is out there on some wikis

First you cut the grass, then you use a tedder, then you use a windrower, then you either bale it or pick it up in a forage wagon.

Silage is made from fermenting green grass and/or chopped up corn in the silage pits located by the dairy barn or at the Biogas plant, in the base game. There are video tutorials on you tube on how to raise cattle....

Speaking of silage... how does chopped corn work exactly? I've only made silage from grass. Harvesting corn doesn't seem to leave anything behind to pick up...

You need to tow a trailer behind the silage machine, or hire a worker to drive the silage cutter and you follow beside with a tractor and wagon
take a look at the videos above.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to YouTube now to see what I can find. Didn't find anything before but now I'll see what I can find out.

You can also take a forage harvester (like the krone big x 1100) with the cutter head and chop wheat, grass, barley, and canola for "chaff" (silage). Or you can take the corn head for the silage harvester and do corn. But remember you HAVE to have trailer within the pipe distance to harvest this. If im playing alone i use 2 of the small agroliner trailers coupled together and attached to the harvester. its shoots far enough to reach the second one and then you can unhook and pull it to the bunker with a faster machine. Also you can mow and windrow grass and use the pickup head on the harvester to pick it up and throw it in the trailer. same for the "straw" left after harvesting wheat. if im not running cows i will just pick up the straw and turn it into silage becaus silage makes more money than straw bales. you can sell all bales in either the bale barn or in the bio digester at the bga. hope this helps. let us know if you have any more questions.

PS. Ive put about 91 hours on this game, 106 hours on FS-2013, and 21 hours on FS-11 and im still finding little tricks and new things every now and then. plus i live on a farm so its easier to me to figure out. it can be a tough game to learn how to play properly but youll get the hang of it!! good luck and have fun.:steamhappy:

@etxrudds - Thanks for the help. Your answers give me what I was looking for. The funny thing was that when I took the loose chaff from wheat to the Bio Gas Plant I could not put the stuff down to mix with the grass that was already there. So all I've been doing is bailing the chaff and selling it at the barn to get some cash out of it. I've got some grass from around the farm area at the Bio Gas but still not enough to make silage yet.

ok. sounds good. i wasnt aware you couldnt mix "chaff" and "silage" in the same bunker though. glad i could help!

oh. and try planting fertilized corn. itll make a lot more than just grass. and something that might help is finding a krone big m 500 mod. its a huge self propelled mower with a swathing function so you can cut large quantities of grass and not have to windrow and then pick it up with a forage wagaon or forage harvester. i believe there is a big m 500 on modhoster.com that i have.

you need 10% filling, then drive a tractor on your 'grass' in the silo, so it will compress til its 100%, than cover and wait until its ready. then use a front loader to transport that new stuff to the selling point. or you can use a conveyor belt mod to pick stuff and unload on another conveyor belt diectly to the selling point. or use a ramp mod

And yes the conveyor belt works. Try finding the ones that attatch to 3 point or front loader or telehandler.

speaking of mods.

does anyone know of a site with Farming Simulator 2015 mods on it that is NOT littered with 'download now' icons all over the place making it hard to figure out what exactly you are downloading.
