What does a black square with a number in center of the map mean?
I understand that when a number like this is below a unit on the edge of the Operations Map that it represents the number of turns remaining until it arrives. However, I noticed one near the middle of the map at the beginning of two of the campaigns. Here are screenshots that show what I mean:

"3" in Stepanovka.

"2" NE of Saur-Mogiliskiy.

Bonus points for answering the following:

I'm a bit rough on my topographical map symbol knowledge. Near the black square with the number 2 found NE of Saur-Mogiliskiy (link above), there are two examples of a symbol consisting of 3 dots situated around a small circle. I know I've seen that somewhere before, but, Google skillz notwithstanding, I was unable to find their meaning. I seem to recall that they meant broken/rough ground, but have a feeling that I'm wrong. At any rate, if anyone has a link to the symbols used on the maps in the game, that would be neat. But, no biggie. Just curious! :)

I think the numbers are a display bug.
There is a lot of topographical symbols, we should make a FAQ about that :steamhappy:

Yeah, can't imagine how long it took me to realize the darker and lighter shades of a map represent terrain height, subtle but brutally important. :hvy_tank:

Re: black squares - Graphical bug, eh? OK! Thank you! :)

Re: topo map symbols - Yes, it would be nice to have a symbol legend/chart. Nothing fancy. Just like what they put on actual maps. :) I believe that the dots with a number by them are elevation measurements. And in the small Russian campaign, the "277.9 height" mentioned in the Operation notes is referring to I think is actually Mount Saur-Mogiliskiy, the key point near the summit which is marked with a circle with 6 short lines radiating out from it. And, the straight horizontal blue lines are...marshes, I think? :/ Also, I know that somewhere I've seen the symbol that looks like a little grave headstone that is situated on the NW side of Saur-Mogiliskiy itself. Anyway, bottom line is that it would be nice to have a symbol legend. :) Not a HUGE big deal, but it would still be nice, nonetheless. ;)

Thanks for the feedback! :) I've been slowly putting together a sort of "player aid" guide as a supplement to the game manual. Who knows, if it's good (and polished) enough, maybe I'll post it someday. Slow going, though, as I have some medical issues which prevent me from staying up for very long. :/ But, I love this game and its sometimes mysterious system. :P Anyway, take care! :)
