I've got this provblem and have posted a question about it as well, with no responces. I've also contacted Steam on thier facebook page to as after the problem since I find the support pages here too confusing to use.

I'll let you know what they tell me if they get back to me. ^_^
i figured it out. right click on back to future episode 1. go to properties. then local files. click on browse local files. right click on back to future 101 file. go to properties. then under compatability tab check off run in compatibility mode for and select windows 98. this is the only way it worked for me. i contacted steam and no help either. let me know if you need more help.thanks for replying. nobody else did.

i came here cuz indie royale but Deejay has it figured out
If you're on Windows 8 and have an Xbox 360 controller connected, this is a common, known and never fixed bug for most Telltale games.

The dinput8.dll that comes with Windows 8 is incompatible with Telltale's engine.

Simple fix, download an older version of dipunt8.dll, e.g. from here:
http://www.fichier-dll.fr/dinput8.dll,724 or
http://www.topdll.com/download/dinput8.dll?q=5e08ac958be05247ff1539e0d1ce7905
(do not use any of their scan software, the download should be a .dll file or a .zip archive containing a .dll file - if it's an executable, delete it, run away and hide under the nearest table)
and place it inside the folder of each affected Telltale game,
e.g.
\SteamApps\common\Back to the Future Ep X

Works perfectly fine from there and this fix has no side effects, even the controller stays 100% functional. I personally prefer this over "Windows 98 compatibility mode".

As far as I know, this currently affects all current Telltale games, including The Walking Dead - and I frankly find it rather embarrassing that Telltale never bothered to properly fix any of them.

Would just like to say thank you very much! Your solution worked for me. I'm using Windows 8 and the compatibility thing was the first thing I tried even before I opened this thread, but it wouldn't work. Unfortunately my controller still doesn't work. Probably because it's a Logitech F510 and not a real Xbox controller. No biggie, I'll just use mouse and keyboard

it works for me with the compat mode but interrupts the sound, barely playable

Yup, this did the trick.
dinput8.dll did the trick with W8 and 360 controller. No error message - just entries in the Event Log. Same prob on Walking Dead - very annoying this is still a problem.

Wow, was that addressed at me?

1. Looks like my link is currently wonky, it did work perfectly fine at the time of posting. Thanks for letting me know in your charming way, I have added another currently working one.

2. Are you really so ignorant that you mistake French for German? I mean, the bloody TLD of that domain was .fr ...

3. ... well, you don't even know how to use the "edit" button and just posted three comments in a row, so that may answer that.

4. Nobody forced you to use use the site I linked, it was just an example for one of the many sites that host the correct file, that why I wrote "e.g." which stands for exempli gratia (that's neither French nor Germany), but you already showed your proficiency with languages, including your own, maybe I'm just expecting too much.

5. You could have also used this link: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=dinput8.dll+download and just found a working download of the correct version of this .dll (Windows 7 RTM is your best bet).

6. Yes, unplugging one's controller is an alternative that works for most people as well - personally, I prefer a one time fix over crawling behind my PC and unplugging my controller every time I want to play these games.
