Failed to start the game (unknown error) [SOLVED]
Ive been getting this error since yesterday every time I try to run the game, Ive already reinstalled twice but I keep getting the same error every time.
This all started happening after I had to do a system restore last nightafter which the game apparently got uninstalled, so I tried reinstalling, it was after this that I started getting this error, I tried the suggestions in the steam site, but nothing, tried uninstalling and reinstalling again and still nothing. Prior to this I had been able to run the game no problem, albeit withut use of the controller, however Id had no issues otherwise.
The game doesnt crash or give black screens or anything it simply wont start at all, so, has anyone experienced this? Im on windows 7 64 bit, other than this problem nothing else seems to be wrong with the system, far as I can tell.

Edit:I was finally able to get the game working again so I figured Id share in case anyone ran into the same issue, this is a very specific problem however, so chances are if youre on a different system or getting a different type of unknown error this fix wont help you.

Basically the reason my game wasnt working anymore was due to the visual c++ install becoming corrupted after I had to do a system restore, this prevented me from playing the game as the game requires said install, and unfortunately, its very specific about the install it requires, ie. even if you have another version of visual c++ 2005 the game wont work unless you use the specific version it comes bundled with. The problem was aggravated by the corrupted install preventing me from uninstalling it to try a fresh install. The way I finally managed to get it to work again was three steps basically.

1.-Download and run Revo Uninstaller ( http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html ) usising the extended option to forcefully remove the corrupted visual c install

2.-Open regedit and use it to remove the following keys [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\x86_policy.8.0.microsoft.vc80 & vc90 entries… as pointed out in the following thread by the genius TANKtr0n ( https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/228f31ca-c6ea-4065-b194-fca208d1af82/error-1935an-error-occurred-during-the-installation-of-assembly-microsoftvc90atl-or? )

3.-Reinstall the visual c version that comes bundled with the game, you can find it by default at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kelvin\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2005

IMPORTANT: This is a fix for the specific issue of having a corrupted visual c install, if you want to try it first make sure that this is the reason behind your unknown error, this is a blanket term used by steam for any errors it cant identify, so even if you are experiencing the same message the reason behidn it may be entirely different and you may end up screwing up your installation or registry if you do this without verifying the cause first, even if it is the same error there is a chance your computer will behave differently, I tried many other fixes unsuccesfully before finally arriving at one that worked but other people reported getting results with them, this is just the one that worked for me, be specially careful when messing with the registry and using the extended options of revo uninstaller or you may end up causing more harm than good., so follow these steps at your own peril, the game runs perfectly fine again for me at least so if anyone else runs into this specific issue hope this helps.

What are your specs and does this happen on any other game (as a quick google search brings up this error happening to people on many different games with no real solution)?
