Dark Messiah is nothing like, Kingdoms is buggy and unfinished.

Alpha Protocol has a similar complicated plot, but is not so actiony.

what about the complexity of loot and rarity
his1roguenation Jul 28, 2015 @ 9:12pm
There is nothing like it, that easy it is.

Yakuza Kenzan! and Ishin! share -some- similarities, but focus heavily on QTEs and presentation (rather than on freedom). Both are also JP only, as always.
There is also Shinobido: Way of the Ninja (same developer, obviously), and its PS Vita sequel, but I never played them myself.

I haven't played the Vita game myself, can't comment.

I can say that Shinobido is very different from this in many ways. Direct combat is much less of a priority (although you have a few ways to make your character better at it). You're mostly going to be trying to avoid head-on encounters and kiling enemies from above/behind/below/otherwise stealthy positions. You primarily want to be luring them into traps where you can one-shot them rather than trying to actively fight them.

You can use items to give yourself an edge - explosives and poison are common and powerful options. Also, in the original game at least, you can craft custom-made items that suit how you want to play. You can make massively-powerful explosives that slaughter crowds (explosive power increases blast radius with damage). I'm not sure how much of that carries over in the Vita version.

Also, there was a PSP game which had a very different structure from the PS2 original, but tied in with it in a few ways. Both are good games, but I'm not sure which the Vita game takes after more.

The story in Shinobido was somewhat flexible in how you progressed. You were a "freelance" ninja, able to take on any jobs you were offered, or pass them up if you chose. Some would be offered only once, others would be available for several nights. If you took a mission, you could complete it or fail it, and if you failed without dying, the world would continue.

Being seen by enemies (and not killing them, or letting them set off an alarm) meant that the lord you had worked against would hear of your actions, and lose trust in you. Failing a mission would mean that the lord you had done a job for would lose trust in you.

If you had a mission to steal things, sometimes you could steal extra, and get a bonus reward. If you finished with more than the basic amount, the game would ask if you wanted to send it all for the bonus. You could refuse and only send the basic amount, keeping the excess for yourself - either to reduce the strength bonus provided to the lord, or to sell for extra cash at a later stage. You could also refuse to send any and sell it for yourself on the market. This would result in the items going to a random lord after a couple of nights, and is treated as a mission failure.

The system for manipulating the factions was pretty fun, and there were 4 endings (1 for each faction, and one "true" ending). Less than WotS4, but still not bad. Mission chains were semi-random as to what you were able to do, and there were only a limited number of story missions (some randomised between a few possibilities, others fully scripted) alongside the generated ones.

The PSP game had a linear "complete mission X to unlock mission Y" format, with a couple of branches that led to different events instead.

Shinobido: Way of the Ninja (same developer) old game thou

Can't think of anything similar to wots

Shinobido is just Tenchu with different name and characters. Acquire made it because they lost Tenchu rights. Shinobido is about stealth and ninjas, just like Tenchu. Shinobido games are unique too, but different from WotS games. I don't think it's worth getting Vita only for one game.

Maybe first game is old, but there is always Shinobido 2 with which Ghostlight could start like they did with WotS4 (I'd buy and prefer both though). Hope they'll port Shinobido games next, I'm not even doubtful, Steam version can outsell Vita.

Dead Rising... sort of... maybe a bit far fetched.

I would not call Shinobido another Tenchu. Shinobido is way different. The story as well as gameplay in Shinobido is less complex but rather straight forward. Tenchu has quite some story since it also had its debut on the ps1. Except for a few chars i liked in Tenchu i still prefered Shinobido cause its style was very similiar to the wots franchise. Even the charakter design is closer to wots than to Tenchu. I actually would hope that shinobido would have a steam release. Especially shinobido 2 because i never managed to get a ps vita. Still got shinobido on the good old ps2 though.

I wouldn't say Shinibido is 2 is as great as 1, as for it being similar to Tenchu not by a whole lot, only things I would have said are similar are the tools you can use, 1 was a lot closer to Tenchu then 2 is.
