i've only played wots 2-4.
Story:
4 has the funniest and weirdest.
3 has the longest and perhaps the best. also the only wots that has no time constraint
2 is so so.
Combat:
4 combo is satisfying, but sword feels like a blunt kendo sword.
3 is too complicated, combo is hard to perform because enemy tend to bounce up in every hit
2 has the best parry system. Trash mob doesnt feel like a slog to kill, because counter atk tend to be 1hit kill
Customization and weapon system:
4 has the best sword customization. Upgrading doesnt require you to save scumming and crafting is also easier (you can disammble sword to get all of its parts)
3 has similar upgrade system with 4, but 3 weapon crafting is really grindy because weapon part drops randomly
2 is the worst. you cant craft new weapon, and upgrading require save scumming to get the best result.
World and sidequests:
4 has the smallest world and not so interesting sidequests
3 has the (unnecessarily) biggest world and sidequests
2 has better sidequest than 4, and world as big as 4. imo, 2 also has the best npcs
2&4 are perhaps better for newcomers. 3 is borderline frustrating for me
The first game is amazing, for it's time the story and mechanics are impressive. It has multiple endings (each with actual different ramifications), a good cast of characters who you get to know quite well considering the game is 2 days long, totalling about an hour per ending. Each ending adds to the overall enjoyment of the landscape and the characters.
It's set during a time when the game doesn't hold your hand, you just explore the area, which is reasonale in size to not get lost or feel like you don't know where to go. There's also a few encounters that are not essential and easily missable but adds more to the background and story.
Overall one of my best ps2 games I've ever bought! Also the soundtrack is brilliant, just look up brutal heart way of the samurai on Youtube and you'll see what I mean. Honestly 10/10.
The second game I've spent the least amount of time on, although it is a good story too, albeit a little less enjoyable than the first game. The characters are interesting and there's some good music. The game has multiple endings too, a lot more NPCs and has some references to the first game, even though this is set before the first game. I haven't done all endings and such but I'd give the game 7/10.
The third game really opened the series I think to a wider audience and made use of the new gen consoles of the times. The third game has like 22 endings, although some are similar. Characters are good and interesing, factions are fleshed out and for the first time, there isn't a time constraint so you could spend months in game just doing jobs and not worrying about the main story. I definitley rank it higher than 2 for the moment, although that would change I would think if 2 came out on steam. But overall the lowest in the series, but it's still enjoyable to kill a few hours. 6/10
The forth game is the second best in the series. I love the time period and the characters and factions are really engaing for me at least. It is a bit silly but you can miss most of the if you choose. They revamped the Brutal Heart song and actually it's great! The game holds your hand a lot more, telling you where you should go but it is definitley an enjoyable experience. I love the Amihama Eight side quest, making all the other 4 job brokers have meaning.
I so wish though that they would add the first two games to steam. I think they would sell very welll. 8/10
TL;DR My favourite is 1,4,2,3.
Timeline of the series 3,2,4,1.
