Pixel Remaster.
3d version looks like hot doodoo, plays like hot doodoo, and they edited / changed a bunch of stuff.
Hard pass on the 3d versions.
Rydia in 3d version magic is way too strong, a level 14 rydia with minimal grinding in kaipo dessert will land magic spells with 3x dmg as a level 40 rydia in FF4(original) kaipo.
If you want easy, generic, bland , changed rpg from playstation 1 era, then go with 3d mode. If you want the real FINAL FANTASY experience, go with pixel.
Pixel Remaster is closer to the original style from back in the SNES days, obviously, and now that they've added things like the boost you can tweak the experience down to .5 if you think you're leveling too easily. As others mentioned there are some mods, but the PR includes none of the content that they added to other versions, which did irk some people (though I don't mind).
3D Remake's hard mode made the game a fun challenge again, which I very much enjoyed. The Augment system adds an interesting facet to the game, and really changes up how it plays (plus gives a reason to do a NG+ if you want). While it doesn't have the GBA version's extra dungeon, it does include two secret endgame bosses if you want a tough challenge beyond what's normally in the game. The downside here is that the 3D version was made for the DS, and later for phones, so it is very throttled compared to other versions and plays much slower. I got used to it eventually, but compared to the PR version, it crawls.
The big thing in the 3D remake that does make it more interesting is that some characters got changes that made them better. Edward, while still being weak, is far better in utility thanks to how his songs work, and his Salve ability, for instance. Tellah gets a big boost to his HP and intellect (spell damage), making him better. Little things like that which are just quality of life things, that the PR version didn't do.
First of all, Edward has all of this on pixel remaster, it just isn't pointlessly renamed to stupid things.
Second, Edward isn't even a "main" character, you play him for like almost none of the game.
Third, Hard mode in 3d version is easy, and the augment system is honestly not great or game changing, not really sure where you're going off about that.
Pointless buffing minor characters that aren't full party members is pointless.
Edwin isn't "extra content".

If you were to tally up literally every single change, addition, or alteration that literally every single version of this game beyond the original FF4 release has ever had, you would come up with a profound number of changes over the years and iterations that have overwhelmingly favored NOT the final 5 in their final incarnations.
And this isn't even mentioning TAY, where you play more as Edward than you do Cecil.
