game won't launch or run

i don't know what is going on but the game won't launch or run for me i keep getting an app crash when hitting the play button on the launcher. i have directx installed and updated and all the vc redistributables installed as well but every time i click on play on the game launcher i get an appcrash in FF4.exe. has anyone else had this happen to them and if so how did they fix the issue?

I've read about people having the very same issue with Windows XP, 7, 8, and 10, so it can't really be from the OS.
I have Windows 7 64bit, and like you I tried everything. Reinstalling, installing on another hard-drive, verifying game files, shutting off the virus scanner, shutting off Windows Firewall, repairing and reinstalling VC and DirectX, updating drivers, compatibility modes, admin mode for both Steam and the exe, window and full screen modes, closing GeForce Experience, unplugging all USB devices save for the mouse, restarting my computer... I even tried renaming the intro movie file in case it's the intro that crahes the game... but nothing helps.

In most configurations it just crashes with a windows Error Message and in some compatibiltiy settings I get "Error Code 740".

I finally got it to start!
In the course of my failed attempts I had deactivated all the extra functions of my Saitek Gamers' Keyboard, but to no avail.
But now thanks to a post in another threat here I tried to deactivate the command pad that comes with the keyboard (just 9 double tieable buttons, so nothing fancy really) and against my expections it worked.

So if you have ANY input deviced other than regular mouse and keyboard, try deactivating them in the device manager.

since the game is on sale and having much frustration getting this damn game booted up found a weird way of it working.....

go to library, ff iv, properties and turn off enable steam overlay and turn off desktop while vr is active and vwalla

To fix this you need to install a VC++ redistributable (usually games do this anyway on first launch)

I know this thread is super old but I figured I would put what I did to get my copy to start working correctly, running windows 10 btw.

So for me the game would start, show the two company logo's and crash. In the games folder there is a mkv file called Opening that is the FMV that is supposed to play after the two logos but would always crash for me before showing. I just deleted the file and launched it and after the two logos it went straight to the main menu and works.

Hey if you guys got windows 10 and have a way to store your steam games with a external hard drive you can transfer all your steam games to an hard drive as well with all the applications and program files for it. Then you have to fully reset your windows 10 and clean everything off of your disk drive. This will allow you to install DirectX completely without having any of your files being corrupted. My Final Fantasy didn’t work when the sound, music, and voice acting didn’t played, but once my pc was reset. DirectX was installed completely and I was able to enjoy the game again. Resetting and cleaning your disk drive will fixed this issue. Trust me.

Thank-you so much. I deleted "Opening" in the Local Files for the game and it stopped crashing.

I have never used a remote on my computer until recently. This game and some others were giving me some issues. For me I turned on "Big Picture mode" in steam loaded the game. worked first time. hope this helps

I was having the same problem, deleting the opening movie didn't work, but running in Big Picture mode did!

Looks like there might be a few different issues that are causing these problems. I was also getting the two logos then a black screen. Additionally, it appeared to try and get into a scrambled version of the title screen, but would crash if I launched anything. Deleted the MKV file, and it fixed the issue. Thanks a ton!

I KNOW THAT THE THREAD IS OLD, BUT IF YOU GUYS ARE USING MSI AFTERBURNER, TURN IT OFF ONLY BEFORE IT COMES TO THE MAIN MENU, AFTER THAT THE GAME PLAYS ALLRIGHT, SRSLY I JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY BUT ITS REALLY AN ISSUE KKKKKKKK

i tried somebody idea stopped Nvedia overlay and steam also the run the game on 800x600 screen and launch the moment matrix logo starts to disappear press ESC twice or three times game runs successfully
