Same as psp version?
Does anybody know if this is the same version of FFIV that was released on PSP? I have the PSP version but I've never played it. If this is a more remastered version I'd much rather play this.

The PSP version is a remastered version of the original SNES in 2D.
This is a 3D rendered remake that was first released on DS, then IOS and now steam.
Totally different than the PSP version, in almost all aspects but both are the newest versions of 2D and 3D remakes respectively.

PSP has alot more content than the previous 2D versions yes, but the 3D remake has different extra content that the PSP version does not have.
So its not correct that the PSP version has more content, this one even has new game+ up to 3 times that changes alot during each playthrough. Also has its unique bosses and many things that are brand new.

The 3D version has unique abilities and so many things that the PSP version doesnt have but again 2D and 3D are very different.

I was about to say the same thing. Anyways I would say this is the best version of the game quality and content wise. Although I do like art style of the PSP version.

I liked the PSP-version more tbh. But i'm really sick about these invisible walls and the suddenly appearing cutscenes when you only want complete the map first.

Never had a PSP. The original SNES version is(was?) my favorite. It took me a couple of hours to get used to this Steam release, but I'm diggin' it now. Agree with Peanut above, I doubt you can go wrong whichever version you get. Classic game.

Is there anything extra in this version that was not present in the DS one?

PSP if you don't mind that you will never strugle in this game. PSP FF IV is the easiest main FF ever made, it is the only flaw in this version.

Also worth to mind that FF IV PSP is complete edition, you're getting FF IV, After Years and Interlude (not available for Steam)

Interlude is a mini sequel to FF IV, it fills the hole between FF IV and the main sequel, After Years.

STILL no matter what you will choose, you won't regret.

Semi-related, but since you seem to be knowledgeable on the various version differences, what about FFV and soon VI on Steam, which are based on the iOS 2D ports... do they heavily nerf the difficulty like 2D PSP FFIV? Or are they unchanged from the originals?

I'm planning to build myself a FF library on Steam in the upcoming holiday sale, and I'm planning based on what version is "definitive" on Steam and what I'm better off playing elsewhere.

I have no idea because ios versions of V and VI are so ♥♥♥♥ that I didn't play them much.

Alright.

I found it out for myself though, they are identical to the SNES versions in difficulty, no changes whatsoever to gameplay except bug fixes.

I actually wish they would put Hard Modes in these ports (not IV because IV DS is already hard enough, and is indeed "Hard Mode" here).
V is not that easy if you don't grind at all (and don't use gil toss) but VI is very easy, they could use a harder version, and other old RPG Steam ports like Grandia 2 did add a new hard mode.

sadly we got the worst version T_T even the gameboy advance is better. the game is still worth playing, it's just that this is the worst version.

Doesn't the PSP version have an AI bug that makes enemies skip turns and turns it into the easiest version of the game by far?

I'd say that's the worst version, if true.
Graphics are personal preference, but gameplay and challenge balance are set in stone.

So I'm hearing kind of mixed opinions here, but I'm still curious to hear if more people would recommend this version over the PSP version, or the other way around. I was planning to nab this during a Steam sale eventually, but it looks like I could order the PSP version online for around the same price, so I'm conflicted.

I'm only now getting around to properly playing the FF games-- I've beaten VI and VII and am currently working on VIII. I played a bit of the DS version of FFIII years ago and got bored with it around 12 or so hours in. I was mildly enjoying it, but the battles and gameplay were starting to feel really grindy and tedious and the story wasn't holding my interest at all. I may give it another go someday, but how does FFIV compare to it? Also, I see people are saying the DS/mobile/PC version of FFIV is harder than the PSP version. I don't mind tough JRPGs (like Shin Megami Tensei, Etrian Odyssey, Fire Emblem and the like) if there's a decent story or interesting and well balanced gameplay, and if there's absolutely minimal grinding, but if it's a grindy sort of challenge, I'd probably prefer the easier version. That's usually one of the quickest things to kill my interest in an RPG.

Also, how different are the two versions' translations (if at all), and how essential are the After Years and Interlude things? I don't know much about them.
