Press and hold the select button for a couple of seconds and you can switch items into any order you please. For some reason the inventory automatically scrolls to the top which makes it rather annoying to do. Fully possible to put sirens in the first slot though.
And really, auto-battle is a godsend for farming. Why are you hating on it? It beats having to actually pay attention while farming, which makes it go faster.
Taking away the combat style of FFIV would make it not FFIV. It's dumb to want that.
So.Very.Polite. Story is what makes FF games, not repetitive grind. I know many people replaying Dark Arisen part of DD for hundreds of hours just because it's fun. I also saw many angry trophy hunters here on forums blaming FFIV for its RNG. Oh yes, call me dumb for wanting some interesting battle system, sure why not.
FFIV's RNG really is rough, but that's pretty common with these games. Just wait until you get the Treasure Hunter augment to farm, and it'll be painless as possible.
I could probably go on. Look, I love this game, but its plot is not really good, let alone what defines it.
-Main protagonist's best friend secretly likes his girlfriend.
-None of the main cast die except the old man.
-Bard happens to be a prince.
-Main villain and main protagonist are related.
-There are/were people on the moon/another planet with highly advanced technology.
-Final boss says "I shall never die, so long as evil people exist" when dying.
Look, I know you want FFIV to have a solid, fresh plot even after all these years, but it just doesn't hold up. It doesn't matter if it was good back then, it matters whether or not it's good now. And it's not.
