Frankly, they should have ported Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection instead, as it was a superior game in every way to this.
I like the 3D remakes a lot myself but still want the PSP versions of the games too because of how good the sprites were in those, easily better looking than the Pixel Remasters (and no style clash with UI or backgrounds) and with more content too.
There are mods to swap the sprites in Pixel Remaster for those in Complete Collection on Nexus if that's the main draw for you.
For me, I want Complete Collection because it features the most content out of any version of the game.
Do any of the other PRs get PSP sprite mods? Because low quality sprites (and horrendously ugly UI) are main reasons to stay away form PR, backgrounds and music are nice!
But yeah, no mods added back missing content to them? I don't mean just FF4 Interlude or After Years but like GBA dungeons for all of them and whatnot.
Fans were able to backport Pinnacle Station DLC to Mass Effect legendary edition (source code was missing), but I don't see Final Fantasy modding at that level yet.
I looked up and the Pixel Remasters are inherently incapable of having high quality sprites as they run at fixed internal resolution. So even the PSP sprites mod for modern FFIV cuts tons of graphics, and rest is scaled too big and many enemies don't fit on screen so were chopped.
Basically, the only way to get smooth looking 2D FF1, 2, 4 & After Years is to play the PSP versions, thankfully emulator works on everything (even most phones). Unfortunately, I like playing games on TV through Steam with screenshots, achievements etc., so I just go through 3D remakes for now.
With FF5 and 6, there are old versions for phones (both iOS and Android) and Steam that had PSP-style content and HD sprites and backgrounds, sadly they're delisted now, so people can buy the "new old" remastered games with graphics redrawn again... If you had them bought before they still work tho (or find them archived by nice people.)
Now-gone PC ports were divisive with mobile UI and art style (even though it was made by original artists), but it's where fan mods make the games look gorgeous, PSP-style sprites mod for Final Fantasy 5 old version is on Nexus, and 6 has tons with Atma Weapon and even Brave Steel for even more detailed sprites. And UI patches too! See Moogles & Mods Discord.
So the only game where Pixel Remaster is actually the best looking and most complete 2D version seems to be Final Fantasy 3, but we have 3D remake of it too.
PRs do have good music so there's that, we can also port it to other versions of games or even mix with some other tracks. I installed a mod updating music for FFIV3D once I went halfway through. It good but 3D version's OST also holds up extremely well.
Personally, I loved the PS1 Origin version of FF1, it had one thing over PSP, difficulty and the old magic system. If you like old school cRPGs especially D&D based ones like Baldur's Gate, NWN or Icewind Dale, Final Fantasy 1 in Origins version IS the thing to play. It looks good, sounds good and has classic magic system.
P.S. Someone who played GBA Dawn of Souls version of 1-2 should comment to say if they were good... IIRC, IV was actually good on GBA & PS1 version only stands out as having ugliest CG intro Square made, it has LEGO graphics like FF7.
tl;dr:
1-2: PS1 (hard) or PR (easy) version for old magic system in 1, PSP for new.
3: Pixel Remaster for old style game, 3D remake for new.
4: PSP port for most complete version, 3D remake for fun alternative.
5-6: Old ver. with mods if you can find them. Otherwise, any work.
7: PC version with mods, 7th Heaven is VERY easy to use and supports Steam.
8: Remastered edition, mods optional, I used Demastered & UI change.
9: Port is already good. Memoria patcher helps. Moguri mod optionally.
This will give you 4 games in HD 2D graphics and 5 in 3D running with decent resolutions for classics. Any newer main titles (post-PS1) already have full 3D in any version but do look up fan patches to smooth framerate, resolution and optionally change models and textures.
We have real PSP versions of three games and fanmade mods for two more, 5 (finished) and 6 (unfinished). For people who like that style (why someone wouldn't). Only four numbered Final Fantasy games didn't get a playable 3D version.
