Their storepage videos make it look like a rushed cashgrab. I'm all about the 2D in this case

3d is the way to go, the 3d port isnt great, but its playable. 3d also adds different gameplay elements, story, and additional content.
The 2D is just the SNES version without any extra content, and is considerably easier than what it used to be. The Pixel remakes are the cashgrabs lmao.

Its because its a port of a DS game. It was pretty great as a DS game so fair enough if a straight up DS port on PC is a bit lazy, but I've got fond memories of the DS original and am quite happy with this port.

3D version is really the "Definitive Edition" in my book. The graphics suffer from it being a DS game, but it features the best translations, has real cutscenes and voice acting. And I believe it also has the hardest ( originally intended ) difficulty. Plus the maps, Q.o.L. stuff, etc. IMO there is not a bad version of FFIV. Even the GBA is fantastic (outside of the audio quality , again not really an issue)

I say either start with this, the Pixel Remaster of IV (also dope) or the OG FF II on SNES.

3D version is the better version. More challenging fights, more content (new mechanics and a super boss that isn't present in OG/Pixel Remaster version) and cutscenes with actual camera-work together with original soundtrack make overall better final effect. 3D version might be older, but it still has all the quality of life improvements you'd need. Pixel Remaster is still very good, tho. I think you can't go wrong with any version you pick up.

They're both cashgrabs & ports of ports: 3D from the DS remake + PSX port's cutscenes, while the 2D is re-ported from the wonderswan remake & through several other platforms since. I would say it's purely aesthetic preference, whether 3D cameras & voiced cutscenes & added qol features / tacked on content is a nice extra, or extra inauthenticity to you, it's a matter of tastes.

I just want an undub of the 3D version: this has the jpn audio & everything, why so lazy about options? it's like the only thing a port is supposed to do beyond emulating well enough to run.

3D would be great EXCEPT it runs too dang slow. I bought it on sale, too, and while not regretting it (Cheat Engine’s speed hack helps), I feel like I’d prefer the Pixel Remaster. If I ever play it again, I’ll probably do the PSP version emulated just to find out what the Interlude has to offer. Definitely never picking up this 3D version again - but I am glad for the experience, nonetheless.

If it's an option, I would actually grab both the 3D remake and the GBA version.

The GBA version is pretty much the original experience, but with an increased difficulty level and lots of extra content that differs from the 3D remake. Plus, I like that in the GBA version, you can choose your own party for the final dungeon.

I think you meant to say PSP port, not PSX.

For me, Final Fantasy IV was my first Final Fantasy ever back in the day and it had it all, great story and a 5 people strong party, something they never done again. Graphically the 3D version runs under 30fps which can make running around in towns and dungeons less smooth then I would like them to, but the Pixel Remasters don't run at 60fps either.

The 3D version kind of reminds me at Bravely Default on the GameBoy 3Ds, a game I bought but never played due to me not liking to play on such a small screen anymore(I got old). So yeah I will wait until they do a sale again and definitely buy Final Fantasy IV and the After Years. Maybe even grab Final Fantasy III as well.

The Pixel Remasters are not bad, but I would have liked it more if they had remade Final Fantasy V and VI in the same fashion III and IV here is. Maybe give them all 60fps capability, but otherwise the 3D versions are more interesting then pixelated versions of games and then charge more for all of them together then a AAA game costs.

The 3d version doesnt work correctly on parallels There is no sound except for the first cutscene. I am trying to get a refund from steam.

With the PR music mod, I consider this the "best" version. You lose the ability to sub in alternative party members in the late game from previous editions, but you gain the ability to use their old abilities anyways with the augment system.

Really, my only issue with this version is the zoom in. The automap (and sight, which will flat out give you the whole map even if you're not done with the automap) does a pretty good job of making up for it, but I wish there was a way to zoom out.

3D is waaaaaay too slow. Afaik there is no speed up function so auto battle on max speed in random battles takes forever. Pixel Remaster all the way. The intro movie in this version is hella great though.

as the years go by I enjoy pixel games less and less. They are identically boring. 2d animations are played out. There is no real sound just bleepy bloopy effects and infinitely looping theme musics.

I mean games like Octopath have "real sound". That game has tons of issues that make me not like it but there are plenty of "pixel games" that have great sound design.

It purely depends for me. If all that is done is making a game that uses pixel graphics, just like a game 30 years ago would have been made, I am not that interested in it. But if it is pixelart that really looks special from art or from quality... like having HQ pixel graphics that is more akin to something on the PS1... that is different.
Overall what I look for is a game that is instead of having a big 3d graphic a way deeper gameplay, which you might or might not get with pixel games. That is why I am not interested in a big amount of pixel games. If all they are is a standard game wich happens to use pixel graphics.

As for music, I remember the Mega Man games on the PS1. They re-released the first six of them, and you could either play using the NES original soundtrack or... remixed music. The funny thing is the graphic back then did hold up, it even looked kinda ok especially the later games. But the NES sound chip sucked, and could not hold up against the CD sound. Just having a soundtrack that doesn't just consist of bleepy bloopy effects was a big game changer, and it still is.
