The 2D is just the SNES version without any extra content, and is considerably easier than what it used to be. The Pixel remakes are the cashgrabs lmao.
Its because its a port of a DS game. It was pretty great as a DS game so fair enough if a straight up DS port on PC is a bit lazy, but I've got fond memories of the DS original and am quite happy with this port.
I say either start with this, the Pixel Remaster of IV (also dope) or the OG FF II on SNES.
I just want an undub of the 3D version: this has the jpn audio & everything, why so lazy about options? it's like the only thing a port is supposed to do beyond emulating well enough to run.
The GBA version is pretty much the original experience, but with an increased difficulty level and lots of extra content that differs from the 3D remake. Plus, I like that in the GBA version, you can choose your own party for the final dungeon.
For me, Final Fantasy IV was my first Final Fantasy ever back in the day and it had it all, great story and a 5 people strong party, something they never done again. Graphically the 3D version runs under 30fps which can make running around in towns and dungeons less smooth then I would like them to, but the Pixel Remasters don't run at 60fps either.
The 3D version kind of reminds me at Bravely Default on the GameBoy 3Ds, a game I bought but never played due to me not liking to play on such a small screen anymore(I got old). So yeah I will wait until they do a sale again and definitely buy Final Fantasy IV and the After Years. Maybe even grab Final Fantasy III as well.
The Pixel Remasters are not bad, but I would have liked it more if they had remade Final Fantasy V and VI in the same fashion III and IV here is. Maybe give them all 60fps capability, but otherwise the 3D versions are more interesting then pixelated versions of games and then charge more for all of them together then a AAA game costs.
Really, my only issue with this version is the zoom in. The automap (and sight, which will flat out give you the whole map even if you're not done with the automap) does a pretty good job of making up for it, but I wish there was a way to zoom out.
Overall what I look for is a game that is instead of having a big 3d graphic a way deeper gameplay, which you might or might not get with pixel games. That is why I am not interested in a big amount of pixel games. If all they are is a standard game wich happens to use pixel graphics.
As for music, I remember the Mega Man games on the PS1. They re-released the first six of them, and you could either play using the NES original soundtrack or... remixed music. The funny thing is the graphic back then did hold up, it even looked kinda ok especially the later games. But the NES sound chip sucked, and could not hold up against the CD sound. Just having a soundtrack that doesn't just consist of bleepy bloopy effects was a big game changer, and it still is.
