Though their popularity as a class in Final Fantasy is probably because, as you say, it sounds like "dragon."
In the original Japanese, they are Ryūkishi or "Dragon Knights."
The historical mounted troops have no relation. Though a division of leaping FF dragoons charging the lines at Beersheba would have been something to see.
Though technically, the ANZAC 4th Light Horse Brigade were mounted infantry rather than Dragoons, since they used their bayonets instead of sabres.

Also memory limitations were still a thing. "Dragon Knight" was probably too big to fit in the script.
But Dragon is also norwegian word for that platoon. Drage is Dragon here though. So it is confusing that way :P
