Onion Armor: Just as good as Adamant against physical and non-elemental magic AT level 99. But it's still hard to get, since battling armored fiends is a headache.
Onion Helm: Great speed boost, decent defense. Otherwise "meh"
Onion Gloves: These make no sense to me... ZERO defense or magic defense... Only boosts evasion and spirit. Only get one if you want the Onion Knight achievement.
For Geryon Adamant Armor and cursed rings combined with Blink pretty much makes him a joke. There's no way you can loose with that combo. Proto Babil is a totally difference story.
For your example, on the 3rd play I had 3 adamant armors and 2 onion armors. I Gave the Onion Armors to Cecil and Kain and the Adamant Armors to everyone else. IMO the best Equipment possible is:
Cecil:
R hand: Onion Sword
L Hand: Onion Shield
Head: Glass Mask
Body: Adamant Armor
Hand: Crystal Ring
But of those items, wish the exception of the Onion Sword and Shields for Cecil & Kain, the only thing worth the work is adamant armor.
And all of those are VERY hard to get... When I get a chance I'm gonna post a list of general lessons learned on a full 3 play extravaganza.
didnt know about the crystal ring but when i go back again ill start to grab
- Twincast = Ultima
(OR)
• Limit break with Kain + All stats 99.
- Onion Sword
- Focus
- Jump
- Cry debuff
- Darkness buff = Maximum damage.
You can use 1 adamant armor (+back formation +Brace +draw attaks) = Counter Ninth Dimension / Low damage from Light of Babil.
Oh btw, Divine Judgment can OS your party, no matter what is your mr if you have less than 6k-7k hp. So, be carful when you trigger his second phase.

Dude there's only one limit Break in the steam version. Also, the point is NOT to trigger his 2nd phase at all. I beat him on the 2nd try, my strategy was:
Cecil: Limit Break + Focus + Darkness + ???? Love
Kain: Jump + Cry + Darkness
Rose: Omnicast, dualcast etc
Rydia: Brace, Draw Attacks, Dualcast
Edge: Bardsong, hide, phoenix (just in case)
Equipment (YMMV):
Cecil: Onion everything
Kain: Onion everything
Rydia: Ribbon, Adamant Armor, protect ring
Rosa: Ribbon, Adamant Armor, protect ring
Edge: Ribbon, Adamant Armor, crystal ring
As soon as you can get brace on rydia before she gets KO'd. When he hits your with 9th dimension you can revive her and get Brace back on if she does get KO'd.
Once you have Rydia bracing continuously you only need to keep her HP up and get darkness + 3 x focus on Cecil, hit with ??? love. Each hit of this should give you 99,999 damage, so hit him twice with this and ONLY this. Then you need a guaranteed way to do 80k more... Which is easy, jump with Kain + darkness 8 times. Keep a count, each will do 9999... Once he gets off his 8th jump, Proto babil will be at slightly higher than 120,000~ So... Charge up Cecil for his big hit. Then get hastemarch going with Edge. Once that is set up, hit with Cecil, dualcast meteor with Rydia, dualcast Holy with rosa, and send Kain into the air. It's all a numbers game, with this strategy he can't even get off light of Babil, or his 28k+ cure spell.
Also, in regard to equipment you have Ribbons listed as a possible head armor for 5 characters... Getting beyond 2 ribbons is doable, but it's a pain in the balls since the enemy you get it from (Dark sage) isn't reliably encountered on it's own. Onion shields can be found from thunder dragons which are siren-able. I had 2 blue tails in an afternoon. Onion shields are even better than ribbons as they can even prevent slow, AND if you can get them on the first play they're yours indefinitely. Adamant armor will obviously do the trick but it's a tougher slog.
Edit on Kain jump method : If you don't pay attention to the timing when he have 120,001 hp left, then hit him will all you've got. He can heal between kain jump and the rest, then you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up if followed with Divine Judgment.
With your strat, it's better if Rosa heal Babil with 9999 2 times instead of Kain jumping 8 times. Then Cecil deal another 99,999 hp. As long as he doesn't have 120 000, but 120 001 left, he will still be in his first phase.
About the stuff, the end-game equipment from the lunar subterrane is well enough for Geryon, PBabil and Zeromus. The onion equipment bring nothing special -except onion sword-, they're just lowering the mr.
But as long as you have someone with draw attak, brace and adamant armor, the rest is just damage, since Zeromus is hella weak and Geryon powerless if you have 1 character equiped with 1 adamant and 1 cursed ring.
Hastemarch makes your party ridiculously fast, so as long as everything is charged up, all 4 characters will hit before he can take any action in phase 2. Actually, When I did it Cecil only hit for ~97,000 for his 2nd shot, meaning Rydia's 2 meteors didn't quite do it. As soon as Rosa hit him with the first of 2 Holy spells, he was done for.
I like doing it this way since, though tedious, it's pretty much gauranteed to work. On my first try I wasn't keeping track this well, and he just started spamming Divine Judgement, and I was done for. It seems kind of ridiculous that they'd have him use attacks that powerful, but then I guess he isn't supposed to be easy...
• Round 9 : 199 998 - (9999 x 2) = 180 000.
• Round 14 : 180 000 + 99 999 = 279 999.
• Round 19 : 279 999 + 99 999 + (the rest) 20 001 minimum = 400k.
What do you mean by no ? With Kain jumping 8 times, you're around Round 28.
Unless you let him jump since round 3 (cry+darkness+jump), but you have to deal with more actions instead of just healing PBabil.
- Round 9 (Cecil) = 199 998.
- Round 19 (Kain) = 279 990.
- Round 20(End) = 400k.
Whatever, it's up to you.
?
Meteor is a risky choice since it's a slow spell, but as long as it's well timed with the rest, fine.

2 Cecil Darkness + 3x Focus + ???? Love 99,999 200,002

Having Hastemarch going while launching the 11th, 12th, and 13th attacks is crucial, as is periodically re-crying just to make sure Cecil's barrage lands max damage. Rosa's Holy did somewhere between 5~6,000, but as we can see it doesn't need to do anything crazy.
P.S. Despite my best efforts my spacing won't carry through... You'll have to piece it together mentally.
