Using Rods as Items, I'm so stupid...
When I played the 2d version of FFIV on GBA and PS1, I loved saving MP for my mages in battle by going to item, going up to show their equipment, and then using their equipped rod as an item to cast a spell.

When I got this 3d remake for DS 10 years ago or so, I felt disappointed that you couldn't use rods as items anymore as it no longer helped me save MP. I thought you could just attack with them.

BUT TODAY several years later, playing the 3d remake on PC, I learned that you can change the ABILITIES options so that instead of having a mage use Attack, you can turn that ability slot to Item>Equipped Rod so that you can use the spell on it. Whether it's ice, fire, healing etc.

WHAT THE HELL?! Why did I only figure this out now? LOL is there anywhere this is explained like from an NPC tip or whatever? I can't believe I didn't know this til now. And if I did do it before, I can't believe I forgot!

Ah right, my bad I must have missed this sentense when I read this earlier. I'm Sorry. :)
It's a pretty useless feature and you should probably not replace ability slots with them on mage characters since they have other useful augments they could be using instead. Once Rosa joins the party MP is no longer an issue anyway.

No its not, its actually a neat feature. It allows you to set a Elemental Rods as an "Auto" for Mage Classes like Tellah and Kid Rydia, they do crap damage with Basic Attacks anyways. And near the end game, when you get the Stardust Rod, which casts Comet on use (which is a mini Meteor btw), it does 9999 damage with Rydia. To cast Both Meteor and Flare, you need over 90 MP.

But yes, its best to use them for 'Auto' only and use an augment or something on ability slots

I'm not too far and haven't gotten any other augments yet, so it's pretty useful right now.

Of course, Sir. Don't trust anyone who says otherwise.

In order to use rods or staves(and a few other weapons as well, actually) as items in the DS version, you need to either set it to your abilities as a shortcut, or you can go to the equipment section of your item menu and press A twice. Hectic, I know, but it still works somewhat nicely!

I didn't know about this! Does that mean you can use any rod/staff at any time or only the one you have equipped?

Nope, you still need to have the rod or staff you want to use equipped. Try it with other weapons too! Some have some really nice effects!
