Games similar to metal slug?

Ive played all of the metal slug games many times, even XX and advance and I still crave something like metal slug. What games are closest to the series that I can play?

Look for Mercenary Kings.

Mercenary Kings LOOKS like metal slug but actually plays pretty differently, it's a lot more deliberate and slow paced, with monster hunter style grinding for items. It's a great game mind you, but you might be disappointed if you're looking for a metal slug style game.

I'd recommend playing Risk of Rain, it's very different but also a 2d very fast paced run and gun platformer that I think should appeal to anyone who like metal slug (I love it!).

I haven't played it yet, but Super time force also seems to look like it could scratch the same itch.

Broforce is OK, but I highly recommend Hardcorps Uprising. Its deeply inspired by Contra, Gunstar Heroes, and Metal Slug. Has a beautiful Anime art style, and a huge challenege level in arcade mode. Honestly I think it might well be one of, if not the best run-n-gun game of all time, but because it didnt have a big name, and is very tough, it didnt sell too well. Also, its only on Xbox 360 and PS3 but some people still play online. Coop is just great. Must buy game.

Nothing comes close, that's how good Metal Slug is.

I didnt like it, very pretty game, but otherwise slow paced and the combat just isn't very exciting

Shank 1 was for me great. Played it solo and coop.
Shank 2 on the other hand was (for me) a boring sequel. It was just about killing killing and killing. With no sense. Shank 1 with its story was much better!
