Like Faxanadu?
Is this any bit like Faxanadu? Brilliant game, and love it dearly. Still hoping for a sequel, or maybe Wanderer could make it to Smash Bros on Switch? The moveset could come right from the game :)
Anyway, thanks!

Adol Christin would appear in Smash before the player character from Faxanadu. It's partly because Konami doesn't give a ♥♥♥♥ about the Hudson Soft IPs they've hoarded (it took a huge media campaign to get them to develop a new Momotaro Dentetsu recently) and partly because Falcom would rather push their iconic hero.

Xanadu Next isn't that much like Faxanadu. It's got a somewhat non-linear, interlocking world layout/design which runs closer to Metroid(vania) or Vagrant Story, with combat like Westwood's Nox and lots of elements taken from Falcom's own Ys/Brandish/Zwei!! games of the period. But I think you'd warm up to how Xananext plays, and the atmosphere's somewhat like Faxanadu (mysterious ruins/areas with history behind them, occasionally becoming weird).

Vagrant Story, hell yeah. This game here feels like Vagrant Story x Ys x Diablo.
it is absolutely nothing like faxanadu. its an overhead view where you hack and slash or spam magic through rooms full of enemies. the equipment system would be like dark souls, in that you level up individual stats and all equipment has a specific stat requirment to use it. not sure if they react to stats differently or "scale". your level actually matters in this game as well. in faxanadu it just decided how much money you get when you "load" a game. gameplay is like diablo, you run around mashing the button. also theres an actual story, not just a few random blurbs of "information" followed by enemies that you only know are mutated dwarfes if you didnt accidently skip the single line near the end of the game that tells you so.
HOWEVER.... there are ties to Faxanadu, which you might get a thrill from seeing if you are a big Faxanadu fan, like myself. All of the titles you get when leveling up match the ones in Faxanadu (ie. Fighter, Aspirant, Myrmidon, Lord etc.) and several familiar items reappear in Xanadu: Next, such as the Black Onyx, the Wingboots, the Battle Suit, Death Magic and even the Dragonslayer sword. I would encorage anyone who was a fan of Faxanadu to give this game a try. A different experience for sure, but one that surprisingly retains some of the same feeling at times.
