It's up for debate, but most people agree that Oath in Felghana is the best one.

Personally I think it's Ys Origin if you factor in the story, but OiF and Origin are usually the top two contenders.

But if you're new to the series and just want to try out one standalone game, OiF is the one you want.

Well if you have a Vita then Memories of Celceta is really good, but if you just mean the games released on PC then you can't go wrong with Origin or Oath. My personal favorite is Origin but that's partially because I like Yunica and Hugo more than Adol. I think I'm in the minority there though lol

If you're just looking for engaging gameplay that doesn't feel too punishing, a rocking soundtrack and a pretty world to discover, Ys Seven.

All the Ys games are great, though my personal favorite is Origin. There is just something about the characters, the atmosphere and the amazing soundtracks that makes me come back for more. Being able to choose between 2 A third character unlocks after completing the game characters.. also makes it a bit more interesting.

Ys Origin was pretty damned amazing. I'd say having played a good number of Ys games that has been my favorite.

I'd also vote for Origin. The combat system from VI/Origin/Felghana is my favorite, and I've enjoyed my time with the story and combat in Origin more than either of the other two. I've yet to play Felghana a second time, though - I should do that. (I've gone through VI and Origin about 5-6 times each.)

Uh, available on Steam: I'd say Origin. It's probably the most refined Napishtim engine game in the series (between it, VI, and Oath in Felghana). Gameplay is great, you get multiple characters to play as, each with their own stories, and each with their own gameplay style.

Of the console-exclusives: Celceta. It's a refinement of the party system that SEVEN introduced, with a deeper plot than most Ys games have. Exploring the "foliage ocean" of Celceta is a crap ton of fun, and the quickstep/quickblock mechanics are fun to master.

Oath in Felghana for sure. Ys Origin is also fantastic, but it's level design loses a lot of memorability that OiF had, the art direction is weaker due to everything being in darm tower, and sometimes the story can DRAG to ungodly levels of bad pacing, but that's only the case for one of the characters. But I'm really nitpicking at the two, OiF just has a slight edge. You can say it's like a 10/10 game being compared to a 9.9/10 game, it's REALLY close.

My personal favorite is Napishtim because I'm a sucker for elemental swords, funny light-hearted moments, and it's soundtrack is still the best.

Ys Origin does have a better story but seriously who here plays Ys games for their story. Oath in Felghana is just too good gameplay-wise, even though in Origin you get two characters.

More than 2 characters in Origin, actually. Amazing game.

For me it is Origin and VII.

Ys I & II Chronicles+. Bumping mechanics are the best. Too bad, no other PC game use it.
Also it has the best music in the series.
