How to heal on boss fights?

I'm new to this game and currently fighting the first boss. I have some healing items but on boss fight I can't access the inventory to heal myself when injured. Are we supposed to fight the boss without using any healing items or is there a way to use them?

Equip a healing item on the shortcut button, you can only use that healing item during the boss.

In catasthrope mode, you cannot use healing itens, only on normal mode.
