I probably like Felgahana the least, though, because it's just *too* formulaic design-wise. I've also got a bit of a soft spot for Naptshtim because it's got such a cool setting. The gameplay may not be as polished as later installments, but the story is more fun to wade into.
now i'm planning to play oath and origin on steam too, just 100%ed ys vi ark, nice but most of all ys 2 to me as an old school jrpg gamer is the best one even if ys doesnt feature my lovely turn based scheme :) bump + magic, the jump thing on ys vi it's not my style but still, it's good
then, to me, oath and lastly origin
Ys 2 if you enjoy oldschool RPG aspects and problemsolving.
Ys 6 The Ark of Naphitism if you enjoy massive world building.
Ys Oath in Felghana if you enjoy metroidvania aspects and challenge.
Ys Origin if you enjoy a good story, balanced challenge, more linear experience and great replay value.
Ys Seven if you enjoy rolling around at the speed of sound and newschool RPG aspects.
Ys Memories of Celceta if you enjoy good story and exploration and newschool RPG aspects.
I didn't play other versions of Ys 4 and I think original Ys 3 and 5 are horrible to average at best, so I don't recommend them. Ys 8 looks very promising, it might be the new best one. In short, all Ys games have the potential to become your favorites! (Except for 3 and 5)
For me it's
1. Origin (top 3 games of all time! The only possible improvement I can imagine is skipping cutscenes)
2. Felghana (close to Origin)
3. Celceta (it's not that replayable, but my first and only time was really engaging)
4. Naphitism (rough on edges, but fun)
5. 1 (it's a magical experience)
6. Seven (kinda bland, but really, really solid and that soundtrack is sweet, even among other games in the series)
7. 2 (would be above 1 is Solomon Shrine wasn't such tedious labirynth. A scene with a tower is one of the most memorable gaming experiences I ever saw)
After that I'd say Origin. The game is about equally good, and there's more than one character to play through with, which adds some variety, but something about it just feels not quite as good as Felghana. Everything takes place in a big tower, and while the environments are wildly different as you go through it, it still feels kind of like you're trapped in that tower, while Felghana feels more open. That difference in feel is what puts it slightly below for me.
Ys 1&2 would be next. These two really need to be played in sequence, since 2 is a direct sequel to 1. 1 is a bit rough, not really giving a great sense of what you should be doing next sometimes, and the bosses are generally not very good. That said it's still a fine game. It was my first Ys game, and exploring the world, meeting the characters, and reading the lore felt really nice. There's just a wonderful charm about it, and there's really not many games that give me the feeling Ys 1 did. If you can look past its flaws, it's a really good game deep down. Ys 2 is also very good, and is much better balanced from a gameplay perspective. It takes everything good about 1, and fixes the bad. Though as I've said, you really have to play 1 first.
Napishtim comes in last here. Again, it's a fantastic game, but some aspects just didn't work well in it. The game has status effects, critical hits, more accessory customization, and healing, but it just doesn't feel right. The status effects are more of an annoyance than anything, and stacking defence with accessories was almost game-breaking due to how delicately your stats are balanced in Ys games. And healing in a boss fight... it just doesn't feel right for Ys. The bosses are also nowhere close to Felghana or Origin's quality, and the second-last boss is just something else altogether. But despite all the ragging I'm doing on it, it's still a fantastic game. I just don't consider it to be nearly as good as Felghana or Origin, which is perfectly fair. Keep in mind that Napishtim was the first to be released in Japan, and the first ever 3D Ys gamem and it did it fantastically. Felghana and Origin just built upon it and made a great game into something absolutely outstanding.
Unfortunately, I still haven't played Seven, 8, or Celceta yet so I can't comment on those. I was planning to play Seven sometime soon, but the Steam announcement threw that back a little and I'll probably wait until XSEED finishes their port of it. I've played Felghana and 1&2 on both PSP and PC, and while both versions were fine, the PC versions were still better, so holding out for that seems like the way to go for me. And Celceta, well... I don't have a Vita. I was considering the Chinese version with English patch, but if Seven/8 are already getting ported to PC I feel like Celceta for Steam may as well already be confirmed, so I'll just be holding out for that. Just waiting for that PC Nayuta announcement now ;) ;).
