Issues with the Swing Shoes challenge

Can't really make head or tail of this challenge. How exactly does one swing?

Press A once while under a platform to attach the grapple thing. Use left and right on the analog stick to speed up or slow down or change direction. Use up and down to extend or retract the grapple (you should NEVER actually do this in the challenge because it slows you down). Press A to let go. Play with it to learn how to get the right amount of momentum to quickly land on ducks.

It might be hard on the keyboard because without analog control, you cannot easily control your speed. This is a couch type game so I would reccomend hooking up a controller. It should still be possible though.
