Ancient faces

Is there any hints as to what the ancients might have looked like under their masks + personal headcanons y'all might have?

Much the same as the iterators, I'd've said. Otherwise why would they build them to look like that?

(i assume you mean the noble benefactors, since we know nearly nothing about the ancient civilisation)
there are a ton of graffiti in the game depicting humanoids with tube hair and a pretty flat and simple looking faces, very likely is a caricature of them but still can reflect some notizable features like tube hair, they are also likely mamals since they are depicted with 4 nipples in 2 ocasions so i wouldnt expect them to have any like, reptilian or avian facial features, if earthly laws ever apply here.

The most important decal depicting their appearence aside from all the caricatures is probably GasMask in drainage system, is clearely depicting a benefactor because it has the same body shape and rags in the body but unlike the rich golden mask individuals it has a way smaller mask that simply covers its mouth and no robes or clothes on top of the rags aside from some metalic-esque shoes

yeah I meant them
they may not be mammals because I think the devs said somewhere rain world creatures don't have clear categorizations (but they said it about plant/animal difference, so maybe it doesn't apply here?) but most likely they're probably mammals

I think they were made to look approachable and friendly, not necessarily like the benefactors, but no doubt they had similarities to some degree (imho :) )

I believe they were incredibly similar in appearance to humans! The best depictions of what I presume are the benefactors that can be found in the decals folder are 'foureyes', 'gas mask', 'pilothelmet', 'sittingman', 'boxbird', 'bigwhiteeyes' and obviously the murals. also their hair looked like wormgrass
