Start with the base game to decide if you like it, imo. The DLC does come with "remix" settings that can make the game easier, harder, or add QoL touchups though. If you're reasonably certain you'll like the game, then spring for the DLC.

Survivor is the baseline character, Monk is an easier one, and their stories are fairly similar. One of the two should probably be played first.
Learning the movement controls is fairly important. Being able to do flips, all jumps, sliding, etc can save your life.

There are some weird tricks that are actually crazy useful, sliding forward and throwing a spear something and somehow goes through the lizards hard head.

the dlc is fun but its more or less fan fiction (its a series of mods packaged together the main story content is non-canon), I would not get it right away or at least dont enable it for a first playthrough.

As for if you should get the game, absolutely, this is a one of a kind experience you should go in as blind as possible just know you're in for a magical experience.

The only tip I'll give is to play the survivor, not the monk.

well monk could be used depending on how you ca handle some of the games challenges.
Some people are able to think and adapt to threats like lizards whereas, in the case of my friend, everything is incredibly difficult and overwhelming.
I recommend using monk if your struggling with controls, food, rain, and just the wildlife itself (I get it im yapping)

I bought it with the DLC and it does make it better with the ability to use mods and the additional 5 campaigns its nice. i would say buy it, if you have the money. play survivor in my opinion monk is to easy and would not give you the proper training you need for this harsh world.

It's a solid 5/10 game. Very bland in terms of platformers, and lots of waiting.

It's not a platformer.
Here we go...

Barely any other games have this issue, but I'm tired of people continuously labeling Rain World as the wrong genre.
Rain World is NOT a platformer.
Rain World is NOT a metroidvania.
Rain World is NOT a roguelike (this one seems obvious, but believe me, I've seen someone who genuinely thought it was a roguelike for some reason).
Rain World is NOT a soulslike.

Rain World is, at its core, an open world survival exploration game. Nothing more, nothing less.

I saw a guy call rain world a rougelike. I said i wasn't be he insisted it was. Absolute insanity.

You should start as survivor, in my opinion, it's a good way to start as at start you don't know how actually Monk work but if you want, Monk is easier you only need to know some things.. monk is for being peaceful with scavengers DON'T KILL THEM.. and don't throw spears anywhere normally creatures doesn't hunt you that much as Monk if you don't do a mess.. and YES DLC is very good and improve the game at least 3 times of new content + a lot of mods need it and the game just become really replayable with Expedtion and other fun gamemodes that you don't have in vanilla.
