How do you get past leeches?
Leeches seem like the only enemy in the game where I can't find a way to get past. They don't seem to die from getting hit by spears (not multiple at least), they don't seem to get distracted by food, nothing I've tried works.

I could swear 80% of my deaths are due to leeches. I had like 20 attempts to get past the leeches in the sewer-like area where there's water-land-water-land-water-land then a longer strip of water with some poles, and a shelter immediately after. There's like at least 10 leeches in the last part and they kept converging on a single spot. I have no idea how I finally managed to get past them.

I also died so many times trying to go underwater to the left, immediately after a shelter and a gate somewhere.

Now I'm at the shoreline and I got stuck holding onto a pipe. Spent like 5 minutes trying things until I finally died.

Is there something I'm missing? Can you get rid of them somehow? Kill them, distract them, anything?

swim faster by moving snake zig-zag method, time your dives when they will be far from you, when you at surface level keep jumping in the air while swimming right or left to prevent leeches attaching to you.
If you see bubbleweed - take it. It's portable air tank
Also I recently learned you can stun leeches with snails, so that might help.
Leeches are real bastards, your options are:
Get lucky
Time your swim perfectly, hoping that you understand how to dodge leeches well enough that they wont latch on to you
Find something to distract them (other creatures.)
Get yourself a jetfish as they can't grab you
Get yourself bubbleweed, as leeches that get near you are stunned by the bubbleweed while it is active
Go around.
Take a hell of a lot of time to deliberately bait a leech onto latching, take it to a different room away from water, hope it suffocates before it gets back to water.

You can survive having one or two leeches on you, anything more is usually how you die.
I believe os long as you're going perpendicular to a leech while it charges you, it usually misses.

Another tip: if there's fly enemies around, you can grab onto one of them to possibly glide over the water.

you are dead at arround 5 red leeches or 2 blue leeches, they can be distracted with something, stunned with snails or usually the entire watrer source where they are is entierly skippable (except of DS), you are faster than them but the red ones are too agile to swim through, blues are clumsy and can sort of be avoided. Bubbleweed makes you entierly inmune, same as jetfish.

If you are just stuck in that garbage wastes room that introduces blue leeches for the first time, look at the room for a moment and you will notice the entire blue leech pool is optional and the room offers another path through the ceiling shortcuts.

If you are stuck in drainage system tunnels, best thing is to go left instead of right and collect a bubbleweed since they can easily follow you through the right.

Use the debug mode like I did if you're in drainage. It's an unnecessarily annoying part you can't even backtrack from.

am i the only person who read that they're at shoreline?

There should be a lot of jetfish swimming around that can help you speed past the leeches.
