Post-1.9, Nobody Should be Complaining about the Rain Deer
I can understand the frustration and resentment of getting the rain deer to cooperate before the DLC's release. I even made a rage post about them too. ♥♥♥♥, I've made multiple rage posts about all kinds of RW gameplay and mechanics, both before and after Downpour's release!

But as of patch 1.9, released at same time as Downpour, even I can't find any excuse to get upset at the rain deer anymore. Both the base game and DLC have Remix options available, and 'Tweaked Rain Deer behavior' is one of the default options.

Most notably, you can correct almost any of their behavior by 'wriggling' while holding onto their antlers, rapidly pressing the movement controls in random directions. You can tell it has an effect when they squint their eyes and make their loud call. Doing this makes them start moving again if they've decided to park their asses, and it makes them change direction if they're going the wrong way.

This is ALL you have to do:
  1. Find and take at least two spore puffs, which are almost everywhere underground in Farm Arrays, and almost always in a room on either side of the red worm grass fields.

  2. Bring the spore puffs to the worm grass field room, toss one wherever to break it. You will hear a rain deer's shrieking cry, indicating you've summoned one to your location. They usually arrive in about 45 seconds or less.

  3. Set the 2nd spore puff down where you want the Rain Deer to kneel, and jump into their antlers when they sit down to eat. Hold up to grab them and move around, like a tangle of poles. You don't need to hold up when you're not moving. If you want to be resourceful and/or mean, you can also grab the spore puff back at the last second to save it before jumping up, but you have to be quick.

  4. Wait a few seconds for the rain deer to get up and start moving. If they take more than 8 or so seconds, wriggle your movement controls until they squint and shriek, then they'll immediately get up and start moving.

  5. If they try going in the wrong direction, wriggle the controls again so they squint 'n shriek, then they'll turn around. If they pause to do a ceremonial bowing to another rain deer, just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wait, don't get impatient and fall out into the worm grass. It doesn't take long.

  6. Enjoy the scenic ride!

This is arguably more complex 'required' interaction compared to most other creatures, but in gameplay terms it's not a big deal. Follow these steps and you won't have any trouble.

Also, from the wiki's detailed page about Remix Settings[rainworld.miraheze.org], someone was kind enough to go into detail about exactly what's been improved for the Rain Deer.

Here's a list of most of the changes made when you leave the default 'tweaked deer behavior' enabled:
  • Rain Deer become buoyant when 80%+ submerged in water.

  • Size of antler space is bigger (according to the math?)

  • Legs are roughly 36% longer.

  • Rain Deer always turns around at edges of rooms if you are in the antlers, instead of stopping or kneeling.

  • If 'extra tutorials' is enabled, then Wiggling around quickly might startle this creature. is shown at bottom of the screen the first time you grab their antlers.

  • Rain Deer will turn around when you wiggle enough in the antlers.

  • Rain Deer will not be distracted by exploded spore puffs if you are in their antlers.

  • Swallowing a spore puff that Rain Deer is trying to eat won't glitch out the room.

  • Rain Deer will not rest close to a higher-dominance rain deer, a pipe entrance, or the edges of the room.

  • Rain Deer do not try 'fleeing' the rain if you are in their antlers.

I've literally not once had trouble with the rain deer post-1.9/post-DLC, so it seems to me most people are having trouble holding onto their antlers, or they're just impatient as ♥♥♥♥. These creatures are not speedy like most other life forms in Rain World, so get used to it. They will at least take you where you want to go.

And even if for whatever bizarre reason, you mysteriously have cursed/bugged rain deer still, THERE ARE ALWAYS ALTERNATIVE PATHS TO TAKE IN FARM ARRAYS NOW! Though I'm guessing these updated map routes might only be updated for DLC owners, the Tweaked Rain Deer behaviors are available for EVERYONE.

Yeah so i've had a problem that happens with weird consistency¹ where once i grab on to their antlers when they're kneeling, they'll never start moving.
Wait an entire cycle? They won't move.
They'll only start to move after i let go, so i have to let go of their antlers but stay on their backs, and once they start getting up, grab their antlers again. If i grab on too soon, they'll stop mid-getting up.
This never happened before Downpour, but now it happens whether the "Tweaked Rain Deer behaviors" option is active or not (I think. It's been a while since i last switched between the options.)

I'm also pretty sure i tried wriggling in many different ways.

¹The weird consistency is that it doesn't always happen, but when it does happen, i'm pretty sure it's for the whole cycle (or at least that specific Rain Deer).

How can i get to the Subterranean gate with no help from Rain Deers, without bringing a grapple worm or bubble plant from another region in any campaign that isn't The Gourmand's or The Rivulet's?
The underwater path is only possible with extra air, which allows The Rivulet and The Gourmand to go through.
I know that the first part of the water part is possible for at least The Hunter, even if it's somewhat difficult, but the most important part of it is impossible.
This means other characters need to ride at least two Rain Deers, except for The Artificer and Saint, who can skip one ride by reaching the shortcut in the spider/orange lizard room.

I'm complaining that specific bug, though. Not about the Rain Deer.
I'm fairly certain i reported it, but there hasn't been any updates for almost a year now, so this bug along with the other annoying bugs i've encountered (as well as the temporal travel anomaly jellyfish one, which isn't annoying to me, and was pretty fun to figure out) are still present within the game.

Alternative paths are no better.

One just loops back to entrance to outskirts gates. That path is only used to get pearl and safari unlock.

The second one is underwater and it's not feasible outside of Rivulet slugcat or requirement of bubble weed. And even you pass it - the path there is wormgrass with poles that are too far away from each other that when you jump on next pole and even though you land on it - you land it too low where grass grabbs you by the tail and pull you down.

If i had it my way, i would exterminate both the worm grass. And Any deer that refuses to cooperate for delicious venison.

Brain rot like this is why i avoid the rw forums.
If you played with deers for any ammount of time you'd know nothing fundamentally changed.

I just turned off the worm grass because of how long it takes for the deer to do anything.
