Right now I don't see a way to return to Subterranean from Rubicon

But this area is pretty huge so maybe there is a way?

Reason why I'm asking is mainly: would like to explore Submerged Superstructure with Saint's incredibly fast ascension swim

This is enough reason for me to start a new save as Saint and never go to Rubicon

The one thing I do know:

When you jump down the pit to Rubicon, even if you don't reach a shelter and then die, this time you don't spawn at your previous shelter, but down at Rubicon.

From the sound of it I’m assuming you haven’t quite gotten to saint’s ending yet. I would recommend finishing that first before starting a new save, especially considering how close you are. At that point your options will become far more obvious.

No you can't go back
