I always thought it was like an alternate easy mode to monk, but maybe not?
The actual timeline seems to be Spearmaster > Artificer >> Hunter > Gourmand > Survivor > Monk >> Rivulet >>>>>>>>>> Saint.
Below is a detailed explanation as to why.
Spearmaster still has access to Moon's superstructure, which is still standing.
As Artificer you can try to visit her, and Shoreline is still in her shade, but the entrance to her leg has already collapsed.
As Hunter you can clearly see that Shoreline is no longer in the shade of Moon, who has collapsed pretty much completely by this point.
As Gourmand, you can actually fight what becomes of Hunter if the latter fails to ascend before the time limit, therefore Gourmand follows Hunter chronologically. You can also verify who follows Gourmand by whether they can visit Outer Expanse, the gate to which Gourmand has unlocked.
Survivor can visit Outer Expanse.
By the time you play as Monk, FP's rot is getting stronger, hence why Unfortunate development as Monk is actually harder (same is true for Survivor compared to Hunter). Plus, Monk can find Survivor if you do the Outer Expanse endings as both.
Rivulet obviously comes way after all of that because FP has become rotten almost entirely, leading to the chaotic rain that no other slugcat has to deal with. And, as Rivulet, you restore some power to Moon's systems, which obviously hasn't happened yet by the time you play as any previous slugcat.
Finally, Saint takes place who knows how long after (haven't completed Saint's campaign yet, so there's probably lore about that), but the rains have stopped, and a lot of familiar paths have collapsed, including parts of Sky Islands and at least a part of FP's superstructure, because the path you'd use to get to the Wall from Chimney Canopy is just gone.
Gourmand is first clearly because he's the easiest and has Survivor like spawns rather than hunter like spawns like everyone else (minus saint who has more of an in between), but then you have Arti who's clearly the hardest of them all and also not the first in the timeline so idk why he's second, Riv is clearly the ending of the game so idk why he's third and Spear is first in the timeline and has kind of a nothing story so idk why he's forth (minus saint who very clearly belongs as the very last one)
If you're going by spoilers then Saint spoils Riv and Riv spoils Hunter and that's about it.
Honestly the stories are so not connected that you can play them in any order as long as Riv is last and get the same experience.
