how can you tell where to go?
i am 3 hours in but have just been wandering around. i was able to get to a shelter and rest one time. i think the yellow bug guy keeps telling me to go back to my shelter when i go too far away from it and i dont understand what im supposed to do. how do you find out where to go or what to do in this game without looking up a walkthrough or something?

You'll start getting indications of where to go after you've managed to survive a few more cycles.

Basically, yes.
To survive a cycle, you need to get to a shelter after having eaten enough food to hibernate.

In this game there is often no clear direction where to go. You are an animal in big world and you can go wherever you want.
The yellow creature sometimes tries to help you by giving you a hint about the world, for example the direction of nearby shelter if the rain is coming.

I would suggest that you explore the world around you (that is what I enjoyed about the game the most) and if the yellow creature points out a specific direction you should go, then try to go that way.

Cycle is basically like a day/night cycle, at "day" you run around, explore and get food, at "sunset" (just before the rain) you get to shelter and sleep through the "night" (rain).

Anyway enjoy the game, and if the game gets too frustrating give it a break and come back to it later. If you get confused about where to go, check back in here, post a screenshot of where you are and we will nudge you in a certain direction.

And for the most part, there is no "correct" way to go. Not for your first playthrough anyway. Learning the environment, creatures and your own movement abilities - a good 95% of which are never told to you inside the game - is really your priority.

there is a way to complete the game by visiting every region once and making a specific action there
the yellow advisor does not lead you that way

Of course you can return to shelter again and again. If you find a place where you can stay for a few cycles you definitely can. But if you stay in one place for too many cycles you may run out of stuff to eat.
You know that holding space shows you the map, right? That way you can map the region and explore places that you haven't explored before.

The best advice I can give a new player is just try to explore as much as you can. Don't worry about where your supposed to go or how to progress. The story in this game is very minimal and you will know when you made progress. The most important aspect of the game is exploration and overcoming against great odds. So just explore and try to improve at movement, combat, and path-finding, and try to have fun.

i have used the map to find out where i havent been but it is very hard to go too far out without the rain killing me. i did not know there was a purpose to resting before this so the first several hours of my run i was just going until i died looking for new save points but that was not working. i started resting again after getting food. i am on something like cycle 20 and have found 2 save points so far over my 5 hour game. i got the day cycle up to survivor but i am just going in circles around the same maps forever. food is definitely becoming more and more sparse so i am worried i will eventually be forced to restart if i want to keep playing. one time, i got the option to select "passage" when i rested which did absolutely nothing. i really feel like im missing something because i am 5 hours in but am only going over the same areas over and over again. i still dont really understand what the "point" of the game is since nothing seems to be happening. sometimes the yellow bug plays a video for me or tells me to go places that have nothing there so that has been extremely confusing, and the bug doesnt seem worth listening to.

thank you other kind gamer for putting your hint in spoilers, i did not read it since i am trying to stay spoiler free. this game seems like the kind of game that if you read up on all the stuff then it ruins it so i was trying to avoid spoilers but its pretty tempting since it doesnt feel like im really playing much of the game at all right now lol. i will continue to hunt and rest until something different happens or i am somehow able to find other rooms before it rains, although i have not found any new rooms in hours

Oh buddy I want to help you so much :D Spending 20 cycles in starting location sounds boring
First of all: the rain catches you always off guard, right?
I dont consider it a spoiler, it is just a game mechanic. If you hold space and view the map, these tiny circles appear around the karma symbol on the bottom left. As the time progresses these tiny circless disappear. They represent how much time remains until the rain.

Secondly the holograms are the indications of where to go. If you find them leading nowhere, then you might not be looking hard enough.

Thirdly you must be running in circles. View the map and try to explore all the places you havent been before. If you are feeling lost, post here a screenshot where you are currently or accept my friend request and send me the screenshot through DM and I'll point you in general direction where to go, so you are not running in circles :D

Coming in as a new player, it's helped me out a lot once I realized these 3 things:
1: Not every exit is on the right side, (Shoreline is proof)
2: The game is non-linear.
3: Zones can have multiple exits.
