Axolotl / Salamander as pet?
Do Axolotls / Salamanders make good pets? Or are they to slow to travel with?

Everything is a bad pet. Not only do you move faster than most lizards but they also tend to get into a fight with every creature on the screen. Expect to have them killed by scavs. Salamanders are kind of good to have as pets in areas with lots of water I guess, because they actually swim faster than Slugcat, so in purely aquatic travel they won't slow you down.

as a pet, they are the only ones who can follow you underwater, so they are really good but wont make it too far since they cant wallclimb, if you gte one at shoreline should be able to follow you everywere, cant go to GW because of teh scavenger toll and cant go to SC because of the deathpit bridge

Pretty sure you got your answer already so ınstead im gonna tell you the cyan lizards would be the best lizard pet option since they can leap imo.

Can't they die from falling of the sky islands though? Like, cyans are the best for most areas but whites might be more reliable?

Look at how reliable Lizzy Cyan is 😁 Oh, especially focused with a 'reward'; nót even looking at fellow creatures ...

Would it be worth trying to grind to find a cyan lizard to tame though? I am still on the my first playthrough with survivor

A pet lizard will give you virtually no purely pragmatic benefits. Do it only if you actually really want to.

Never really has for me, since the weather forecast was always 100% reliable ... The thing also is, that I'd recommend taming when experienced, but as someone with enough time booked on this game, I never really felt I needed a pet ... with the exception being maybe 1 area I have been in recently: The Leg as the Hunter; a bunch of Spitter Spiders, but barely any spears, so maybe you brought me to an idea :winter2019happybulb:
TL; DR — I agree with @Nen☆niS; e.g. if no further mission, go fot it! However, from my experiences, I won't recommend the Eastern side of the Subterranean with the [insert something monstrous] 😇
