Is it just me, or was the Rain World ending unsatisfactory?
Ok, so I just played through Rain World, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved everything about it and it’s the best game I have ever played. If anyone says anything differently, they simply don’t have a tolerance for a significantly hard game, or they just got off of playing it and having a hard time, and any anger Rain World stirred up in them was carried over to he reviews. However, even though it was an ending that made sense and lined up perfectly with the lore of the world, it was NOT a satisfying ending. The entire game is about you trying to get to your family, your overseer even shows a slugcat face when he is trying to lead you to the gate to further advance the game. Did the overseer just lie to you the entire game? Are there multiple endings? Do you ever find your family? How are people who have not read the entire lore of the world (found in the Rain World Wiki on the pearls) supposed to understand the ending? It just seems like there are too many unanswered questions, and it is apparent that Videocult is not going to make a sequel to this game that took them 5 years to make. Does anyone else share this view?

post in that game's discussion/review.

and if you enjoy hard games, you ought to give http://crawl.develz.org a try. i haven't won it a single time in 20 years but still play it.

You're not exactly trying to find your family, but the game doesn't make that clear. It's more that you're HOPING to find your family while struggling to survive and make this land your new home. The ending is intentionally confusing and open to speculation, like 99% of the game is. No, there are no alternative endings. And quite a few do share this view, being disappointed both at the fact that it's an open to speculation and getting confused about the family thing. I personally really enjoy games and media with these kinds of stories and endings. It becomes a fun challenge of peicing it all together and discovering new things even long after beating the game and it's one of the things that keeps me attached to this game. However, I can see that not everyone is into speculation, which is fine.

I hear in the next update they're adding new cutscenes for the Hunter and Monk, including new endings. However, you should still expect to be confused by them like the rest of the game's story and lore. I'm interested to see what they are.

Have you played as the survivor? It's the only one with a "complete" ending, either way you do find your family, they ascended before you.

Oh and yes, for some reason the overseer lies to you

That's not confirmed at all in any way. Infact there are some ways to disprove that, but even that isn't confirmed. Edited post for loredump. It is likely that the other slugcats you see are just you. The karma flower lore pretty much confirms that you dying is you on another plane of existance dying, while eating karma flowers lets you come in contact with them to cancel out that death. It is possible that in the ending, every one of you from every reality all join together. Whatever happens after that is unknown. One idea is that you become an echo, being too attached to your home and old ways to let go, therefore forever being trapped there at your home, but that's a theory I will save for another thread.

The part about the multiple slugcats was. The facts about death technically weren't. Here's the Karma Flower lore incase you wanna read it.

"This is a hallucinogenic plant. They used to call it a 'Wheel Flower'. It became the symbol for enlightenment, as it momentarily enables a creature to let go of its carnal self, and to contact the selves of other planes—dreams, memories, imagined worlds. Very long ago, they would eat these and stare into the fire."

Either way, there isn't any confirmation or evidence that you see your family in the ending, it really only sort of seems that way because of all the sudden slugcats.

You do see the slugcats in the tree you and your family lived in.

You see a similar tree (its a bit different in details), yes, but nothing at all points to the slugcats being your family. Not only that, but all of your family members have different details and colors (in gameplay they're all the same color as you, even red as hunter or yellow as monk, but they're also all the same in the cutscene), whereas in the ending they all look EXACTLY like you in every way. And your family very much misses you, and yet they don't even greet you or anything? They all just swim past you not acknowledging you? That's pretty strange, don't you think?

Again, both of what we're saying is not confirmed at all, but through theories and interpretation it is possible to find the most likely answer. Either way, I feel this will be answered in the next update, as I hear that they may add new intros and outros to both hunter and monk, who have the same ending as survivor except with the tree cut out.

I think it's really cool. You were probably expecting (like most) a happy family reunion. But instead, it was a lot deeper than that. A lot. Humans make this idea that immortalitity is 'cool'. But Rain World shows that even though you can live forever you are still insignifiicant. And there's no way out (or is there?)
Rain World is mysterious as heck, that's all there is to it.

I loved the game, but I was indeed a very disappointed with the ending to me... I could think up a bunch of cool endings for the game, but I also think that Rain World’s ending is very unique and can have multiple different interpretations, which is very cool in its own way, so I can settle for it. I just wish that there were other alternative endings.

Again, that's not confirmed at all, and entirely open to speculation. It COULD be your family. It COULD be a mass of other slugcats who got there before you. It COULD all just be duplicated images of yourself. There is no confirmed answer known yet.

I think that's quite condescending. People are allowed to have different opinions to you.
