Help me understand Scavengers!

I have tried to be friends with Scavengers for a while, but I simply can't understand what to do. Here is how my most recent attempt went....

Cycle X: I gave scavnegers one of two pearls I was carrying. When I slept, my Chieftain achivement (which I understand also indicates your reputation with scavengers) went up a bit.

Cycle X+1: I encountered scavengers, but didn't give them a pearl (I was carrying one). When I slept, my Chieftain achievement went down by half of previous gain.

Cycle X+2: I encountered scavengers and gave them my last remaining pearl. When I slept, my Chieftain achievement STILL went down by half of previous gain.

What am I doing wrong? Is simply not doing anything good for scavengers for a cycle reduces your reputation with them? Why did my reputation with them STILL went down on Cycle X+2?

Did you accidentally take their spears or something? Your rep shouldn't go down for no reason. It only goes down if:

1. You've been away from them for a really, really long time
2. You've harmed them
3. You've stolen from them

I didn't take anything from them, or harmed them in any way. On Cycle X+1, IIRC, I didn't even have a weapon with me. On Cycle X+2, I had a spear with me, which I also placed down (and which they took along with pearl). Also, in listed example, not just Chieftain progress went down, but my actual reputation too. After Cycle X+2 I encountered scavengers again with with another pearl, and when I ran after one scavenger to give him pearl he speared me.

Right now, I got Chieftain achievemnt, but I am not sure what my actual reputation with Scavengers is. None of them are following me, but the group I usually encounter between Shoreline and Garbage Wastes seems to be friendly - at least they don't spear me.

A few things I've discovered (the hard way )

1. Giving pearl at Toll increases progress towards Chieftain.

2. Giving a pearl to wondering scavengers may or may not increase progress towards Chieftain.

3. Encountering wandering scavengers and not giving them a pearl (sometimes even giving them one) decreases your progress towards Chieftain.

4. Not encountring scavengers at all during Cycle leaves your progress towards Chieftain unaffected.

That's how it seems to work in my game.

Not 100% sure if Chieftain progress exactly indicates your reputation with Scavengers, but that's the only way to measure it I had.

Giving pearls to wandering scavengers DOES increase rep. I think your rep is just really glitched then, it seems.

It does since the update increase and decrease for no reason. I know because i "ungot" the chieftain achievement and then got it again in the leg, but there are no scavengers there. It hasn't happened to me on places where they do spawn so i don't know if it still applies there

This is the most effective way of doing that

It does, it even does if you give them spears but it's not as effective

Never happened to me, try to not steal the stuff they carry unless you have high rep

If you don't encounter them for a while your rep will start to slowly decrease unless you fully get the achievement

It's a sort of global reputation that affects all scavengers but each one has a different opinion of you
Another thing is that on hard mode your rep will increase a lot less (and in case you didn't know they will attack upon aproach if you didn't increase rep on hard mode)

Now I'm starting to remember times I've gotten cheiftain increases in places like Five Pebbles for literally no reason. I honestly do think it's bugged.

Hm, I see. There's seem to be no scavengers at where I'm right now, so I will have to wait and see if their reaction towards me will remain good now that I have Chieftain achievement...

Update:

Scavengers (at least those in Garbage Wastes) seem to be willing to let me pass without toll now, so it would seem my relationship with them remains good for now.

they do that if you get chieftain
