Question about the Hunter
The wiki says they will cease being able to reincarnate after 20 cycles. What does that mean? I died after my 20th cycle and the game ended, but the same wiki page also says the hunter "must quickly head for their destination". Does that mean they only get 20 cycles of life per region, or overall? If it's overall, I feel like that would hurt the game a little for me. I feel like they should die after the 20th cycle only if they reach the minimum karma. Idk, hopefully I can get good enough to have an ongoing save after 20 cycles as the Hunter because I really love the brutal difficulty of playing it, but I'm not feeling the idea of permadeath in a game which is pretty much designed to be unfair and kill you with situations that are sometimes out of your control.

It's 19 cycles. On cycle 0 The Hunter is very weak, it acts as if you're starving. You will have seizures that make the screen red. In order to temporarily cure this, you must eat food. You need more food than what your cycle number is if you want to become healthy again. The amount of food creatures and other sources gives you becomes lower with the more negative cycles you live. Dying during the "starving" state will be permanent. You can die at full food. Eventually The Hunter can't even get up from hibernation and you will starve on the spot, dying a pitiful death.

20 cycles of life overall. You need to be quick and efficient.

If you don't like that time limit, you can find a mod which gives you infinite cycles.

Great, thanks. I don't necessarily want to beat the game with the Hunter, just play indefinitely in the game's magnificent world. The 20 cycles mechanic seems to be based around winning the game though.

Well... I think you can survive beyond the 20 cycles; but beyond this point, you will receive a permadeath if you die.

You can, indeed. But you're also handicapped because you start off starving when you wake up, and food sources don't provide as much.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

God that sounds terrible... How many cycles does it take to get to that point?

"It's 19 cycles."

Yeah I wish the Hunter just provided a more difficult version of the game without being forced to finish the game. The game's world is alive and interesting enough to be enjoyed without even finishing the game, so it's a strange decision to me to force the player to the end of the game if they want a more challenging run.

From what I've seen it's described as a "speedrunner/score attack mode".

This too. I'd love an even harder mode that doesn't push you to speedrun.

Second this. I get that the descriptions shown on the character-select screen are vague intentionally, but the mere existence of a global time limit (albeit a "soft" limit) on this character is game-changing (no pun intended?) and this should be something you are aware of up front, and not something to discover on your own.

For example, here's a quick stab at an alternate description for this guy:
"Strong and quick, but requiring a steady diet of meat, the hunter charts a path of extreme peril in a race against time itself."

Awesome. That extra phrase at the end could make all the difference. You're right, such a crucial piece of information should be given to the player from the start.

I was honestly really angry that the time limit and permadeath wasn't mentioned AT ALL. You have no clue what the time limit could even mean until it happens. Infact most players ended up trying to discover what happens when it reaches 0, and MAN were some of us upset to have our Hunter saves completely gone because of that.

I was pretty peeved myself.

That's part of the experience, don't you think so ? I found it very interesting when I discovered my time was limited and I was going to die for good. :)

It felt completely different from discovering everything else in Rain World. Finding out, say, the behaviour of scavengers is very interesting and feels like an accomplishment once you know how to properly befriend them. But with the Hunter's permadeath, I just felt like I was cheated and nothing more.
