ending theory (spoilers)
The survivor is reunited with his family... eventually.

In the Monk run, Five Pebbles makes it clear that several slugcats have come through his facility (maybe only survivor and hunter, but we don't know). I personally think that knowledge of the void sea spreads around the slugcat species, as Pebbles wanted, and maybe the entire species achieves ascension. At the very least, slugcats living in the area around 5P's can would gain this knowledge, which would include the survivor's family. This means that the survivor's family, including the Monk, are reunited in the afterlife.

on a side note, i love the plot of the hunter run

I don't think the entire species achieves ascension. They are probably still out in the world in areas we haven't seen, like the area with the tree. And pebbles was referring to the Survivor and Hunter when he was talking about slugcats disturbing him.

ok, maybe the entire species is a stretch, but still. its nice to think that the slugcats in-game aren't the last to achieve enlightenment

You should also realize the game completely builds around the slugcat as just another creature and nobody or anything important, at all. It tries to show the player many times how meaningless their actions are. As Five Pebbles said, you're only doing this for yourself. You can choose to save moon, sure, but she can't really do much but sit around and tell you about the world. You can befriend creatures, but that again won't change how they act towards anyone but yourself. What makes this different from most stories is that you aren't a hero at all, just another creature tragically caught in a problem like every other creature.

I get that. Still, it's interesting to think about.
