It's not really obvious, but when you exit the karma egt and go the leftmost area, you have to climb a pole then jump and grab another that is right at the edge of the screen.
I also made the mistake of going to the Sky Islands right from the start and restarted because it was too much of a pain to backtrack.
I did a lot of bat farming/mini-centipede farming. If you go to the left (just before the large fields of tentacles and spider moose), those mini-centipedes spawn quite rapidly. I would say one every 2 hibernations or so. By doing that and waiting for bats in underground areas I managed to farm up enough karma.
However the latest patch should make it a bit easier, food will start spawning each time you die now.
So if anyone else finds themself in this position, just use passage to teleport to the area you're currently in and you'll spawn with full karma.
I am tempted to make a backup of my save just in case I screw up.
I had this kind of trouble entering Sky Islands just before.
So, the troble there comes when slugcats leap isn't enough to cross a sertain gap (don't have a screnshot of that part, sorry). But, if you have a spear, you can stick it into a wall just below the edge you tried to reach. If you throw a spear right at the moment when you hit a wall slugcat will still hold it when it sticks into that wall.
