If you manage to sneak up behind them (or are close and can get off your first shot confidently) you can usually hit them, grab the spear out from them, and stunlock them until they die or are in a sorry enough state that something else will finish them off. Be careful in case you ever miss a shot though, a split second out of stun is all it takes for that lethal bite.
I constantly find myself feeling sorry for the poor dumb lizards. Every time a blue tentacle horror slurps one up, I feel his pain and horror :-P
First time I ever tried out a scavenger bomb, I obliterated a blue lizard. Couldn't help but stare at the destruction I wrought thinking "Now I am become Death..."
There should really be some kind of pacifist achievement for going the whole game without killing anything :-)
What is that contingent on? I seem to be advancing towards it, despite occasional use of violence.
Ah right, I guess it requires an extended period of pacifism to attain it then. I've definitely had it raise later on after previous violent actions, so it certainly doesn't require an entirely pacifist game run.
I got it after living only on plants, bats and centipes for a while without even picking up any spear or rock. No idea if the latter was essential.
