Mac Release?
So I've been unable to dual boot this thing as of yet. Do we have an idea of how long until they actually throw us an OS download? Every day I go without playing this game is causing me to die a little more inside. I need to die outside. In the rain. As a slugcat. letmeplayplease

Hey, have you managed to play it yet? Otherwise you can run it in wine. There's a port for it in the Porting kit app, go here: http://portingkit.com/en/ install the app and then run it. Click "Library" at the top, then "Server" next to "Local" in the top left corner. Then search for Rain World, click the name in the left column and then install. Make sure to read the "Important Notes" part of the description for the game in the app, you need that info to be able to run the game correctly. I've only played 15 minutes or so but it works flawlessly so far. I can help if you have any problems, good luck!

Portingkit requires the DRM-free gog.com version of the game. Not really helpful to share this on the steam group.

I haven't tried running this on my old MBP, but wine does run windows version of steam reasonably well. if you could get the port then install wine into that bottle, it may work.

Wine is incredible.

It is, the portingkit version of steam (steambuild2 I believe) allows me to run most Windows only games on my MBP, however Rain World won't even install and displays a "wrong platform" error.

I've only built my own wine bottles using winery.. never used a portingkit version, so i'm not sure how much customization you can do. Are you sure it is running as Win7?

Most of my steam builds are for a single game or two, running different settings / versions of windows.

It sounds like that could be an issue, given it saying Wrong Platform. [pretty sure that happens if the OS isn't new enough.] Also, it might be worth checking for engine updates. but again, i'm not sure how that would affect a portingkit bottle. Might be worth trying to make a new bottle.

Porting Kit Developer here.

You can install the Steam version of the game in the GOG port by pressing More -> Advanced Installation instead of Install. When you reach the advanced view, check the Steam checkbox and PK will do the rest for you ;)

Hi there, first off: thank you for your support and also thanks for the great service you are providing!

I attempted today to get the steam version to install as you described. However, this did still result in the notification "invalid platform". Has the approach been tested recently? Maybe there was an update for Rain World and it is no longer compatible with whatever Windows distribution Portingkit is emulating? Maybe it has something to do with High Sierra (most other games run fine so I don't think this to be the case)?

This might not help, but here are some other games where I encountered this issue:
- Cities: Skylines
- Divinity: Original Sin 2
- Natural Selection 2

Not with that game :P

It's a method that usually works for most games, so I supposed it would work with that one as well (I used it myself to install Dragon Age Origins ;) )

Is Steam who is producing the error or is Rain World? I think it's more probable that Steam's minimum requirements are different from reality.

Also, just an observation (don't get wrong, is just that I have the need to correct the term 'emulation' when it comes to Wine and PK): PK works above Wineskin, which is made using Wine, which is a compatibility layer, and so, technically, is different from emulation and is much faster ;)

Correct. High Sierra isn't an issue, unless you are using the 10.13.2 first two beta versions.

Unfortunately that method not always work. Sometimes there are differences between Steam and GOG versions, sometimes the dependencies of a port that are installed by Steam break the port, and sometimes it just works :P

I don't know if you received that same message with those games, but the error message that you received with Rain World seems pretty fixable, specially if it was Steam who produced it.

Yupp it works for me for most games as well (played a bunch of Skyrim recently). So with Rain World and the other games mentioned for all of them the "Install"-button is disabled in the steam library as if I was running the mac version of steam. Right clicking on one of those titles and hitting "Install Game" results in a steam error stating "invalid platform".

So installation is not possible and all errors come from steam itself. Oh and sorry for calling it emulation!

Try installing the win7 winetrick in the port. It should fix the issue.

Don't worry, is a very common misinformation 😉

So I found that winetricks is available via Homebrew, but I haven't found instructions on how to use it with an existing wrapper.

You don't need to install it in your system :)

Right-click the port in PK and press "Wineskin Tools" -> "Install Winetricks".

Thanks again! Sadly, this does not solve the problem. On closer look, however, I found that the systeminfo accessible through steam states that the OS is 32-bit. This seems to be the case for win7, win8 and win10 and all of the games above explicitely require a 64-bit OS to run on. The same goes for the steam-version of "Rain World", the gog-version only says 7 or later.

My bad for not seeing this earlier. Is there a way to have a 64-bit version of Windows in the Steambuild?

Then the only way to solve it is using a 64 bit engine. Do the Advanced Installation again, and while you are in the Advanced Settings step, replace the engine name with "WS9Wine64Bit2.15" (no quotes). It may work, but I have tested the game with that engine.

Like I said, the description in Steam is wrong ;)

We received that request before. Unfortunately, most of the 64-bit games require DirectX 11, which doesn't have a good support on macOS's Wine, so creating a 64-bit Steambuild will likely lead to people claiming that no game works in the port most of the time.

You can install actual the Steambuilds with a 64 bit engine if you use the Advanced Installation and select a 64 bit engine instead (64 bit engines have 64Bit in the name, before the Wine version). However, I insist to try my prior suggestion first, of using the Advanced Installation with a different engine.

This actually did it, at least it allowed the installation of Rain World and the other games mentioned. I only attempted to run Rain World but unfortunately it crashes when I start a new game (no issues up until the cutscene is supposed to start).

Maybe there are some compatibility issues, but I don't know how to begin to identify them since it just closes without an error message. This might be the end of the line for now, thank you again for the great support !

PS.: The full name of the engine would be "WS9WineStaging64Bit2.15", in case anyone else wants to try and get it to run.
