Stuck in the Garbage Wastes, what can I eat?

Died so many times that I can no longer backtrack due to the karma gate, I can venture out to the right and find hibernation points but I cannot find a single bat to eat. Surely there must be something else around this area that's edible?

I think I once managed to kill one of these weird tentacle creatures: https://imgur.com/a/aw0rK but I haven't been able to replicate that. Any tips? If I could just find food I'd be able to move on from this point, but I am helplessly lost here.

Bats in Garbage Wastes often swarm around the shallow lakes. But also there are a few plant food sources you may have not discovered! Try experimenting with the things you find. (OR perhaps someone will spoil you in the comments...)

There's blue fruit near the tentacles, which he eats but don't seem to increase his food count. Just by accident, I pressed the eat button again and he seems to barf it out again. What's going on there?

Don't forget to throw spikes at those red upside down banana looking plants. They will open up and you can eat until you're full. Also, you can eat those small centipedes. Oh yeah, don't forget about those little green worms that have the blinking red light on the top of them. If you drown them, you can eat them.

For what it's worth, food becomes more plentiful in the later half of that level. The first half is almost barren. Or at least it was for me.

You have to take those fruits to the water, once in the water they will become an edible bubble.

Thanks guys, super helpful tips! I was able to get out of that area. I am now stuck in another area :( https://imgur.com/a/4msSX Got a gate to the left of my hibernation point which leads to an underwater area. I am now at the lowest karma rung and locked out of that gate, to my right I can backtrack up until a certain point until I reach a ledge I don't know how to scale. I cannot grind for food since the only food source, from what I can tell, are two blue pods which I can dip in water.

There are these odd snail creatures which will pop and launch me, I can kill them but not eat them. Super lost, considering resetting all progress at this point

I'm in the exact same spot. The... inadequate swimming controls dissuaded me from exploring the waterways after drowning one too many times trying to make the cat move into the air pocket. Now there's not enough food to even get above level one karma :(
It's impossible to leave this area without multiple spears thanks to cliffs, and I can't build a ladder cause that would take several cycles to do, and I can't even get one! Am I boned? Is this just a restart point?

I wouldn't recommend taking that gate at all. It leads to Drainage which is one of the hardest regions in the game, and that particular entrance from Garbage Wastes is the harder of the two entrances.

Turn back and when the path splits with one path going straight to the right and one path up, take the path up. At the top of that there's a cliff you need to use spears to climb up to reach the pole to the top but there are plenty of spears in the ground on the way, you only need two to climb the cliff. There's also a tall red plant which will give you full food if you hit with a spear which also solves your food problem. Hope this gets you out of the area!!

Excellent advice Bom, that's how I got out! Had no idea I could spear the red plant to get so much food. You can also create a spear ladder, then spear the plant and hibernate. When you come back your spears will still be there, meaning you don't have to redo that ladder everytime, make subsequent runs easier.
