Does Drainage System connect to Subterranean directly?
Hi,

I've just finished the game (at least, the main quest + credits sequence) and I've explored about 95% of the map. The only thing I didn't get to do was figure out whether or not Drainage System is directly connected to Subterranean.

While I was playing, I made a map, and I like to complete it.

Does anyone know whether or not this connection exists and what the required Karma levels are?

This is my map so far:

Thanks!

Well it brings you to Filtration System, what I thought was another region itself, though just a sub-region of Subterranean. So yes, it does, AND it brings you close to the end of game.

If you want to check it out, go directly right a few rooms from the Outskirts gate and you'll come to a room in Drainage System that has three big pipes that go downward. The left pipe leads to a hibernation room, the right pipe leads in the direction of the Garbage Wastes gate, and the middle pipe leads to the Subterranean gate. I believe it's 5 karma to enter Subterranean, and 1 karma to leave back to Drainage System.

That's a nice map you've got there. I've been through the gate between the Filtration System and the Drainage System, I'm pretty sure Andrew knows it better than me.

It's worth mentioning that the top part of the wall is a no rain area as well, although I haven't tested exactly where the cutoff is. I assume it's everywhere above the shelter half-way up.
Also, to get between The Wall and the Underhang, you'll need a grapple worm.

I'm not sure exactly how you're defining one-way paths. If you're talking between regions, I'm pretty sure The Wall -> Pebbles and Subterranean -> Farms are the only impossible ones, with The Wall <-> The Underhang needing a grapple worm. Then again, I haven't tried to break past them myself.
Within regions, the only one that comes to mind is in the drainage system (one of the two paths to filtration system). Still, I reckon you could get past that with 4 spears and a bit of time, or a grapple worm. Even then, there's still the other path that requires a lot of swimming.

So, Subterranean (Filtration System) does connect to the left hand side of Drainage System. Once you get in there though, you'll encounter a junction. The "fast" upper way to the save chamber in the middle of the zone is an uphill battle. It is possible, I've done it, but it'll take multiple return trips to position rebar spears and one hiberation because you simply cannot collect enough spears in a single cycle. Even with two cycles, collecting the reuisite number is tough and reliant on very good RNG luck,

The total number needed is five assuming no mistakes (you will make mistakes). That's two to clear the first large pipe in the junction room, then a minimum of three to reach the hanging strut in the central tank of the room two rooms to the right. All three of those spears must be on the right hand wall of the central tank to succeed. Cling to the left wall and wall jump off to the right. Note that you'll have to turn around in the preceeding pipe so you're not barrelling headfirst down when you drop. If this is too annoying affixing an extra fourth spear on the left hand wall of the tank which you can use to reorient yourself helps greatly. Anyhow, once you get a good wall jump, place a spear where you connect with the right hand wall. Drop, return and catch that spear this time. You can now jump and place another apear above you. And another. You now have a rudimetary ladder made of three rungs. That should suffice. The final tank in that room does not need a rebar spear as much as it looks like it does. Just keep flopping around in the water and eventually you'll make it.

Frankly, at that point, you're probably better off diving down to the bottom of the area with the big pipes and taking the submerged lower route, which is also possible.

Getting from Outskirts to Subterranean via Drainage System however is a cakewalk.

I'd also argue that Farm Arrays to Subterranean is one-way. Even if you escort a cicada therefrom Farm Arrays (which you have to to get a pearl hidden up the left hand wall) and attempt to do a 180 and return, the overhang on the right hand wall will prevent wall climbing. All the other one way paths, aside from the issues related to Five Pebbles' murderous rage of course, can be subverted in one way or other, but this one I cannot imagine being reversed even in a turn 180 degrees and head backwards manner like Underhang-Wall-Underhang.

Are you sure? I believe there are some of those food balls for the Deer creatures near the door that leads to Subterranean, maybe you can lure one in and it can climb out? I'm not sure..

Anyway, thanks for the feedback everyone! I've modified the map a bit and will post it as a community guide.
