What is the goal??

I'm playing the game, and I'm just not really understanding what I'm supposed to be doing. I follow the map to get the blinking stuff (just food?). Little bee thing tells me there's a bear that way, but then never says anything once I get over there.

I just feel like I'm fundamentally missing the point. What am I looking for? (Genuine question, not looking for an argument, I enjoy the gameplay, I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to be doing.)

Rainworld is rather nonlinear game. There are specific goals but you can go very different paths to achieve all of them. The "little bee thing", the Overseer, will help guide you, though its instructions at times can be indeed vague. Primarily, I would say the first thing you want to do is progress to the next region. The first region you are in is called the Outskirts, ideally you want to go to the Industrial Complex next, though the Drainage system is also okay - if you head into Farm Arrays though, you're going the wrong way.

Just progress through regions, follow the Overseer's suggestions when you can (the "bear symbol" was the Overseer telling you that it wants you to go back the way it's pointing - in this case, the Industrial Complex).

i did follow the overseer and explore around and stuff but im also having trouble with something for some reason the overseer pointed towards a door but then when i went through it told me to go back so i did but then it told me to go back through the door! i dont understand what to do please help

If none of the above helps, there is a wiki that explains a bit more of what you're supposed to be searching for, and where to go to advance that search. Not gonna explain more here to avoid spoilers, since I think it's a really interesting story.

Without spoiling anything, if you want to progress the story, try to go always northeast then north.
If you go southwest, you will get stuck unless you progressed the story.

It does feel kind of pointless so far. I got to the sewers from the outskirts. No real progression in the game, though

If you keep following the directions of that little yellow worm eventually the game gives you a goal. I suppose the region you entered is Drainage System , that region is considered one of the most difficult even by veterans! I suggest going back to Outskirts and look for a pipe with a purple glow, after that keep going east af far as you can. You're still free to go anywhere you want but this route is more manageable for new players.

Karma, the symbols you see when you Hibernate. You need to Hibernate until you reach the required Karma level or above. If your at the required Karma level, simply wait inside the gate for it to close. If you lie down or stop moving, it'll register as you waiting faster.
