Midway - Japan
So, sinking the Yorktown and the Lexington in the Battle of the Coral Sea (Port Moresby invasion scenario) i then face the Hornet, Enterprise and Yorktown again at the Battle of Midway. Shouldn't there only be 2 since i sank 2 carriers in the previous battle?

But even after sinking the 3 carriers in the Midway battle it doesn't count as completing my secondary objective. Is there a secret 4th Carrier (Saratoga?) present or is that secondary objective just unachievable?

I understand it's a linear game not a dynamic game based on what you do in earlier missions. You baiscally follow a yellow brick road from Kansas to Oz and basically get what was there in each mission/scenario.

Not 100% correct. What you do in one mission affects what happens in the next. Even though the mission path is linear, the forces and other starting conditions of the next battle will be different. You can see the effects on the strategic map at the start of each battle. There will be little pins in the map that you can mouse over and see the effects. For example, sinking all of the battleships at Pearl has an effect of reducing US strength later in the campaign.

Ok so a yellow brick road with some new straw for Scarecrow if you win the last scenario. Still Linear no matter how you look at it.

If you sink both carriers in the Coral Sea, then there will be only 3 carriers in the Midway scenario. But the secondary objective is completed when you have 4 carriers destroyed. But the bonus is 200 ressorces per destroyed carrier. So no problem. If you know this it is better for you when 1 carrier escapes in the Coral Sea.

I had the same problem. Thanks. Anyway I think the objectives should be more transparent, it is very confusing as it is.

I agree with the OP. I also thought I had missed a carrier. The objective should be marked as completed after the 3rd carrier is sunk.

Huh.. So if you think you could take the extra carrier then it might be best to let one carrier escape Coral Sea. Perhaps there should be a bigger bonus for sinking all carriers at Midway (whether there be 3 or 4) to balance that out
