Encirclement
It's complicated most of the time. Many times the missions make you advance on several axis. Lets says 3 assaults. In order for YOU not to be encircled, you have to leave behind units. AI is among the best I have seen, seizing every opportunity to cut you off. If you defend your supply lines with units, you dont have enough strength, Punching offensive forces.

Thoughts?

It's better than some games I've played. If I'm in a hopeless situation in some multiplayer scenario I'll try to encircle opponent units even if it does no damage, just because the loss of efficiency will slow them down and let me regroup.
It's more of a mop-up tactic when you already have a region under control I find. Early on the AI opponent is still too strong to let you get away with it, and you never really achieve and sustain any grand scale military-genius encirclement. Better players than me may have other views.

There's a scenario in one of the Desert Campaign DLCs where encircling the Allied forces is really the best way to win. Cutting off your enemy's ability to resupply can make defeating them a lot easier.

Blitzkrieg's second mission, Mlava, will allow you to “semi-circle” and defeat the opponent's more numerous AI forces. About the Mlava mission, there are a couple screenshots with explanations. The game is done pretty well. If you have to make frontal assaults, you are provided with a sufficient number of units. Set 1-2 levels of difficulty. Reconnaissance, uncover the map, a reconnaissance airplane is cheap.
