New Georgia owns me :(
I realize most of the current talk is re: Winter War and the new patch but I need advice, haha, I'm really stuck here (in the U.S. Pacific dlc) and I'm not letting myself try Winter War until I finish this campaign!!!

Also, this isn't a rant, I love this game, but I just gave up my 4th attempt - all told, more than 100 turns...embarrassing!

I tried searching this forum for help, but I don't want to deploy a battleship and like a dozen marines, I'd prefer some diversity in my army. But 2 Shermans and a Howitzer with marines aren't getting it done, sigh - what do you guys use?

1st 3 attempts I got bogged down in the meat grinder around Zanana. Tried twice to push through with 4 tanks, no luck. 4th attempt was this morning, half asleep, tried to attack the island (Rendava? I forget the spelling) from the north and south at the same time - it took a few turns and a coffee before I realized I didn't really have enuf supply ships to justify this approach...argh!

I really wanted to own the skies so I took to deploying a carrier and 4 fighters. It's great, I splash everything that shows up, but doesn't support my ground attack - btw, can seabees build an airfield in this scenario?

I'm only playing on level 3, I dropped down from Admiral after Guadalcanal, and started over at Pearl. Do I suck this bad, haha, I mean I made it this far, is this just me? Sorry for whining, still love the game, but 100 wasted turns...

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Take the immediate objectives to the north and garrison with a small force then reload your troops and move along the coast to the main objectives. At the same time, another force should be striking the island to the south. Use a CV instead of a battleship, air power will help but land based planes will not have a high enough presence if they keep heading back to the eastern airbases for fuel--so you will need naval airpower with this strategy.

The main force can disembark at the village on the main road leading to the western objectives. I have never landed directly at the beaches near the main western objectives--enemy presence is too powerful. From there you will have to fight your way west. The southern objectives should be held at this time so those forces can be used to land and attack opening a second front or extending the lenght of the main front.

I haven't played this one in a while so I maybe forgetting some of the details. I've been playing PG style wargames since PG2 in the 90's and this mission caused me trouble too so don't feel too bad.

So New Georgia no longer owns me :) Here's an AAR:

Core Deployments:

1 Carrier
3 Fighters
1 Tac Bomber

4 Shermans
1 Howitzer
2 Marines
6 Infantry

I saved 6 ground CPs, cuz yesterday ran into supply probs, but prolly could have used them. The AA gun proved useless - I kept it on the coast protecting my supply ships, but with 3 fighters no bombers made it that far. The Howitzer was ok - prolly not essential, but I love arty. The Shermans dominated this time.

Rendova:

I sent a force there almost right away, while I secured the 1st harbour and airfield. As more reinforcements came up I sent some of them there, and as the harbour fell I started sending some of these units, too. The final assualt required 2 supply ships as I hit the island in the north and south, a total of 8 units (Marines and infantry).

Rendova fell quickly. As units in the north became free, I put them back on transports (with the PT boat in an adjacent hex, units can embark without a harbour). In the south they used the harbour.

Main attack:

While I was taking Rendova, I sent a small force to take the town east of Zanana. I secured it and deployed my Howitzer and AA gun from there. The timing worked perfectly, but pure luck - the units from Zendova and the supply ships arrived when I was ready to start my drive for Zanana. Yesterday I only had 2 supply ships cuz one was glued to Zenddova forever - taking the island quick ensured no supply probs at all.

In previous attempts I took Zendova so slowly that the Long Toms wre too late - but here they really helped by hitting the arty beside the airfield, which really hurt my efficiency before.

The biggest change I made was adding a Tac bomber, instead of 4 fighters, really helped. My Shermans and infantry punched thru the area around Zanana easier then before. One prob was that enemy infantry attacked the rear of my sort of column. The stragglers from Rendova arrived in time to help, but I ended up losing 3 infantry units - argh! I decided to play on, usually would restart, but really wanted to beat this scenario.

My Shermans pushed on to Munda and took the airfield on turn 45 - just in time. The salvaged Japanese hvy fighter and my tac bomber, along with some reformed infantry and my now healed Shermans took the final objective rather easily- on turn 52 it was all over.

Prolly made this scenario harder than it had to be but it was sooo sweet to finally win :) I love this game.

Thx a ton Pugio for your help and support :) I was typing my AAR when you posted your comment, the reason I didn't acknowledge it then. Thx again!
