Heavy Infantry "support fire" in Marines?
I've played the first two missions in the Marines DLC and had Heavy Infantry but didn't see any sign of the Support Fire ability mentioned on the store page. They just had the mortar mode like in the Boot Camp campaign. Does it come later in the campaign, or am I missing something? Thanks

Could really use someone who played before the Marines DLC to weigh in on what specifically changed about Heavy Infantry.

The ability came with US Marines. You can see what changes were made in various patches if you check Patch Notes (launch screen, bottom center).

v2.3.8 – March 29, 2016

Gameplay
• Heavy Infantry: Can now use a Mortar Fire ability which serves as a light, short-ranged artillery weapon

The mortar mode is what they mean by supporting fire. It can lower entrenchment and morale. Heavy infantry in the game does not have anything else.

Ah, so was that not in the game before the Marines DLC?

On the one hand I approve of new mechanics being free, but on the other hand the store page does make it seem like a paid feature exclusive to the DLC. They should make that clearer.

Edit: I also just noticed the store page lists "Mortar Infantry" as a new unit addition to "Support Fire" as a mechanic. If that's also just referring to the alt fire for Heavy Infantry then that seems like they're trying to make one thing look like two.

I bought the game only after the first 4 DLC's were released so I am not sure what they added or not with the US Marines campaign. I doubt, however, that they didn't have the heavy infantry before. Maybe they just gave them the ability to use mortars with this DLC and used this to advertise the new marines campaign.

Can anyone who played before the Marines DLC confirm that the mortar mode is what was added to the Heavy Infantry when the DLC came out?

I thought support fire referred to the fire they provided if next to a enemy when you attack with a different unit
They should really use their mortars in defensive support fire imo
Edit:
just looked at store page it's specific to heavy inf so it must just be the mortar fire thing
Played since day one and thought we had that all along but they must have added it with marines
They changed a stack of stuff around then, arty used to do direct damage a lot more
and didn't need to rest after firing x amounts of times
They added the harder to kill units when only a few left unless the attacker had precision strike trait
and tons more

Game is way better for the changes too

The manual refers to that as Outflanking Support but any friendly unit can provide that, not just Heavy Infantry.

Could really use someone who played before the Marines DLC to weigh in on what specifically changed about Heavy Infantry.

edited the post above
It must just be the mortar fire, loads changed when the game tried the f2p tag( it was just a paid for game till then)
I thought we had mortar fire before but obviously not

Thanks, and good point, I should have checked the patch notes.

But since it is the case that it's a free patch feature, it does bug me that they're using it as a selling point for the DLC. And not just once but twice, as both a mechanic and a unit. Seems disingenuous to me.

Sadly that "using it as a selling point" has been done a few times with a few games. They have to sell their DLCs otherwise the games die. That said, for me, this game has always had good replay value where say PC1 (Panzer Core) seems to have died off.

Again for me the supply line was break all for PC vs. this game. Also, with the new revival of Hearts of Iron IV (not this company) it makes it even harder for me to go to PC2 at all.

Now if this latest DLC and patch is any indication of what they plan to release in the future then I may have to place $litherine on the back burner for awhile. Really haven't seen such a failed release as this latest one. They took on too much at one time I do believe.

Have fun Gaming!

p.s. I see your question was already answered but yes before that patch Heavy Infantry was just that, slower, harder hitting.
