Clearly not a game for newcomers
I haven't played previous titles but when I read this wasn't connected to them and a great starting point, as a JRPG fan, I decided to preorder it (I'm impulsive)...thank the gods I decided to play the demo........preorder CANCELLED

Here's the main points

1. Graphic is 2010 at BEST. You can see it looks pretty bad compared to other JRPG titles

2. Gameplay is reminescent of PS1 Tomb Rider. Fixed animation and movement, camera...it just gives you the feeling of a very old game..and not vintage, just bad

3. The combat system is a mix of Turn based like standard JRPG and Action combat, taking the worst of both worlds. Turn based means you're in front of an enemy in a small space. Action means you can move around. Here you can move around in a tight round space around the enemies. Feels bad. FF VII does this A LOT better, giving you space to move around. Or like ATLUS games they could just leave Turn Based combat

4. 2010 hardware. No widescreen support. I changed graphic settings from Standard to High 0 difference. 60-120 FPS, that is partially good, but the graphic is so bad won't help

5. The devs candidly admitted they changed the character design to please more the western audience. While they do not look bad , you miss a lot of the "sexy", and cute stuff you're used to see in JRPG

These points may look like small things to some, but when you start to add them all up.......I think this game is GREAT if you're used to Switch graphic and are a long time fan of the series......but...

If, like me, you're a new player, don't know the story, don't have any particular feeling towrad it.......it is very hard to justify these points..especially poin 6

Where is point 6???...here it is

6. 70, 80, 120 EUR GAME? ARE YOU CRAZY??..For the gamplay and graphic i think 40 will be on the high side, maybe 25-30 acceptable.......70 is NO THANK YOU

Gust always has been a niche developer and have had neither the staff or the budget to produce games of AAA quality that you demand, and you don't seem to realise that the majority of the games you compare to have higher production values. As for point 6, you might not have noticed but game prices have gone up across the board for games released by the large publishers. If it's not a price you're willing to pay, so be it, nobody cares. The fact that you expect full release performance from a game demo makes you an idiot and judging the unreleased final game on your experience with the demo is just stupid.

People need to stop disregarding the fact that Gust is not some small independent studio but is instead fully owned division of Koei Tecmo, a big, rich company with billions of yen in revenue. And it's that company that funds and sets prices for these games
Irrelevant. You realize how many small studios are owned by giants like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony?
KT and the atelier specific team is still small.

graphics are important for most players, gust must realize they wont win over this kind of player with their budget restraints, their new strategy will just kill the series

Exactly.

The problem is they are probably inside an echo chamber formed by the likes of the guy posting directly above you.

The opinion of the broader audience they are "trying" to reach probably never actually reaches them.

random nonsense about armored core and unsavory fetishes

Never played armored core, I prefer Western Mecha, and I have no interest in your family fetishes.

So, yeah, Gust is busy listening to guys like this.

Says the guy who wouldn't bash Armored Core for being a worse than this game graphics despite being premium price. Love the hypocrisy.

Didja finish ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ your sister, btw?

Lol, Critical Hit! I see this all the time. "This games sucks 'cuz the graphix suck! *In another thread* "MINECRAFT AND UNDERTALE ARE THE BEST GAMES EVAAAAR!". I 100% respect people liking games that aren't always AAA gray-graphics fare, or only those types of games, but it's laughable when people are open hypocrites because their brains are too scrambled between streamers' opinions.

That isn't to say I think this game is worth $70, but everyone has different tastes and maybe that's totally a fair price for someone. People will spend tens of thousands of hours on "free" early-access or live-service tripe then turn around and claim $70 on a good-looking game ("But the GRAPHIXXXXXX!") is the straw that broke the camel's back. Being $10-20 overpriced should not get this kind of screecher response, but everyone has to be outraged 24/7 now to feel anything (Their Palworld hugging pillow just doesn't do it anymore!)

my guy. graphics don't matter. you can have a 2 hour game at 8k graphics with utterly ♥♥♥♥ gameplay at your logic. stupid. the exchange rate is time put into the game and how much of that time is enjoyable. jrpg as a genre is not really graphically dense games. it is usually 60-100+ hour games. they are charging you the current year standard of price for game. simple.

Sorry, but this is nonsense - as Koei Tecmo's own catalog of games attests.

Besides, the idea that "Graphics" and "Gameplay" are somehow mutually exclusive is also nonsense. And if graphics didn't matter, development studios wouldn't be pouring billions and billions of dollars into advancing graphics with each new generation of hardware.

What's more, "not" spending money on graphics results in large savings in development time and expense.

Since we agree that Yumia's graphics are indeed subpar, why the premium price tag, since the devs saved so much money on "not" providing good graphics?

we do not agree. i think it looks fine

demo before release to help them identify what went wrong so they can patch it day1. crazy that someone would look for constructive criticism to help make the experience better on release day.

This is precisely the game Gust prepared for newcomers as it greatly simplifies the alchemy system which had always been the one and only unique and fun mechanism to explore. The thing is many developers are trying to make their game 'attractive to broader audiences' by simplifying the core mechanisms and utilizing popular elements like open world, but lost the uniqueness of their games in this process. I would recommend playing Atelier Ryza 2, which was the best Atelier game in the past 6 years.
