The developers have done everything they can to make sure you can't see Yumia's underwear, even if it makes her dress unnaturally clingy in awkward ways. Would have been better to put in her pants or shorts if you ask me, but this isn't done because of censorship, its done because they want to sell DLC that has her showing a lot more skin and her glorious glutes.

Yes. It's a slippery slope of wanting sex appeal but not wanting fanservice to be the main selling point.

You have clearly not played the demo, because when Yumia is fighting and makes horizontal pirouettes, you can clearly see her underwear. It's grey by the way. If you don't believe me, look at the demo footage of The TwitGamer. So - Yeah...

Yumia’s design is a thoughtful example of character creation aimed at emphasizing particular physical attributes. While Ryza’s design appeals to those who favor a strong focus on the thighs, Yumia’s design is carefully crafted to highlight her backside. She has average-sized breasts, a slim torso, and toned, long legs. The combination of a slender upper body and legs accentuates her rear, making it a focal point of her design.

Some might argue that leggings or shorts could help accentuate her curves. While this is true to an extent, such clothing options would reveal too much and reduce the impact of the design choice.

The tight dress Yumia wears is a deliberate design decision, meant to emphasize her backside rather than serve as a form of censorship. The extreme tightness of the dress creates a visual effect that makes her behind appear larger and firmer. The dress is designed to hug her body tightly, which draws attention to her shape. This is further emphasized by the way the dress stretches under her glutes, accentuating her figure.

In conclusion, the combination of Yumia's slim torso and the tightness of her dress is intended to highlight her rear as a central aspect of her design. This design choice can also be seen as part of a marketing strategy, particularly when additional DLC is released, such as a swimsuit version that further emphasizes her form. This approach encourages fans to engage with the character's design by offering exclusive content that focuses on her physical attributes.

No, they mean in the many curated cutscenes and you know it. Once you start noticing it, yeah its really obvious how out-of-the-way they have to go to not have her constantly being upskirted.

Her design *looks* fine, but a pencil skirt is maybe the single worst item of clothing for a character with such an active high-kicking fighting style. There's a lot of styles of shorts that would work, and you could make a skirt work well with bicycle shorts, opaque tights or leggings to still have one while hiding the underwear. Dare i say putting slits up the side with tights would work just fine to keep the general design the same. Just feels odd when they had the sense to brace her boobs with straps (even if just to be horny) and... not the part doing the most movement. There are sexy clothes you can move in- you really don't have to make the design awkward to do it.

So we gooning or nah?

For me its a nah. To the point of almost feeling lied to. The main draw for me to jump in with this game was a character presented as a mature woman. She's clearly drawn a LOT bustier in the promo art, least of all the "high kick" art where they present her as at LEAST being an F-cup.

Even in the ingame screenshots its like they specifically chose the angles that they did to make her look bigger than she was when I loaded up the demo.

*Sigh* At least there's Nina, I suppose...

Nice chatgpt essay, son. But no awards from me.

This all sounds great to me hype

I think the developers overdid it with censorship in one area: camera angle.
The open world invites exploration...but how are you supposed to explore steep slopes when the camera tells you: "This is the limit"?...you'll easily miss a passage or an item that's a bit higher up.

You're straight up wrong, Yumia flashes her panties multiple times in the introduction sequence. Not putting them in your face all the time doesn't mean you can never see them. They're just deliberately thoughtful with the camera angles and cutscene direction given her design, which is something that's always been the case with Atelier, just look at Corneria in Sophie and her design which seems very revealing but which doesn't show anything in the combat animations regardless.
Sure there were ways to see things before, IIRC Rorona's item throw animation for some items just flashed everything, but Atelier's always made characters' underwear something that could only sometimes be seen, if intentionally at all.

Now this is an actual problem, the vertical rotation of the camera is frustratingly strict even in aiming mode. It's an area where their attempt to protect Yumia's dignity negatively impacts the gameplay.

Considering that the 120 dollar edition literally comes with "bikini cosmetics," I doubt the game has been censored.

More like they want to nudge people in the direction of the 120 dollar edition.

Ryza was the same in selling swimsuit DLCs but at the same time they gave outfits with skirts black void censorship.
If anything Yumia is actually a surprising step away from that, additionally considering that the gacha was similarly censored.

That's the definition of self censorship.

It is far more probable that they simply didn't bother making a proper physic for the cloth. It's quite rare in JRPG to see the dev actually puting effort into having decent reaction to movement from the cloth, and as far as Ateliers goes the physic is always bad.

It's not, though. As Shylaar eloquently wrote, it's a thoughtful design to protect Yumia's dignity, they simply don't want fanservice to be in your face in these games, but small glimpses are okay. Moderation is key.

Self-censorship is when they redesigned underwear in Ryza 2 to whatever that is, they were actually distracting.

Look at the cosmetics included in the Season Pass and tell me they care about "dignity" and "not wanting fan service to be in your face."

Buy the 120 dollar edition, or the season pass, and you'll be dungeon diving in nothing but a bikini.
