Possible theories for Assassin's Sword dmg calculation
I've been using this sword for a little while now (after finding out about it via the forums) and damage aside, it's a great 1h Sword thanks to it's crazy reach and speed that is only just slightly behind the Swift Sword and the Light Sword.

However, I've seen varying posts about it's damage calculation and growth patterns, so I decided to do a little experimenting.

Theory 1: "The sword calculates damage via kills, and the amount required grows exponentially every time the damage on the sword is increased"

Occham's Razor. The sword grew in power relatively quickly, using enemy grinding and simple level progression. So what if we just went back to the mines, and just used trolls to level? That brings me to...

Theory 2: "The sword's growth is determined by the exp granted from kills"

I decided to kill two birds with one stone and began grinding the mines to fill out the Bestiary's drop list. To my surprise, after about an hour and some of that, the sword hadn't grown at all. So I wandered back to the temple and began grinding what I lovingly call "shuriken knights", but to no growth avail.

Granted, I didn't spend very long on that, and went to bed soon after. Which brings me to...

Theory 3: "The sword's growth has a cap which is randomly determined"

So yeah. Been playing a while more this morning, just running around grabbing treasure and killing mobs and my sword is still only hitting for 9 points above my listed damage output.

Some people seem to have had very short growth like me, ending between 9 and 11 points. While others have the sword supposedly putting out exorbitantly higher damage output by endgame.

I've removed all the equips that gave me strength buffs in favor of equips with special effects, hoping the sword's continuous growth would help compensate for the lack of physical power.

I'm beginning to wonder if I should just pick a different weapon and begin stacking those Ruby Brooches again.

I'm killing Theory 3 because the sword has finally increased by a single point. I'm going to assume Theory 2 is probably the closest to the truth. :)

Theory 1 is the more likely one. I've finished the game 3 times now. On one occasion, after finding the blade I went back to the mines and setup a routine where I killed 3 Glowworms every 2 seconds or so and the sword grew quickly in power.

In another playthrough I didn't go back and just decided to use the sword and push forward. It didn't gain all that much power during that playthrough, while my character did level up multiple times.
Thanks for the input! The sword has barely grown at all during my grind to fill out the Bestiary, so I'll try a method like yours and see how it does :D

yeah, I had the same theory, in fact I did test it, killed 100 worms + goblins on the start map ans soon I looted, didnt save, reload with the sword without any use at all and killed 50 golems + 50 gelatinous cube (for the last 2 entries on my bestiary loot), and it did increase the same amount, its most likely per kills, and not exp...
Yeah, after I ran through it with the weak blue goblins I was wondering if it worked anything like the Hat Familiars, but nope! I grinded that area with the 4 glow worms just before Basden's cell and it proved to be the best spot I have found so far :)

leveling is a geometric progression based on your level with some constant (12) added.
Attack is base attack + level

The first levels come real quickly, too bad I missed the number of kills on them. It looks like it slows down from +7 onward pretty harshly. Something to do while mindlessly farming. I didn't see a guide about this anyway.

At char lvl 28

+8 to +9: 193 kills
+9 to +10: 256 kills

That's when I got bored.

In version 1.076 I increased the damage of the assassin´s sword from 47 to 54 in about 30 minutes with no recognizably linear progression. It took quite long to level up to 53 damage but only 10 more kills to got to 54. What I did in between was to keep the time between consecutive kills low. Maybe that´s another idea worth observing. I used the sword only in the mines in a run from left to right below the floor 1 elevator.

Couldn´t reproduce it. What I could reproduce was that the assassins sword increases damage when you level up. Maybe that´s what broke the linear progress.

claymore type weapons are way more useful throughout the game, and if you have the flying sword you don't need anything else anymore.
